There were a lot of shocking moments in Dexter: New Blood Episode 9 — including the death of true crime podcaster Molly Park. Molly had spent the season investigating Iron Lake’s missing women but was kidnapped and killed by Kurt Caldwell for her meddling. It was a stunning twist not just for viewers but also for Clancy Brown, who played the killer.

‘Dexter: New Blood’ Episode 9 revealed Molly Park’s death

At first glance, Kurt seemed like an average guy, a business owner and community figure. But he was later revealed to be a serial killer.

Kurt preyed on women who were runaways and transients, kidnapping and killing them in a ritual ceremony. After being tipped off to him, Dexter and Harrison found Kurt Caldwell’s trophy room in Dexter: New Blood Episode 9, where he had the bodies of his victims on display. In one case was Molly, who had been looking into Kurt.

She’d been working with police chief Angela Bishop, who briefly arrested Kurt for the murder of her best friend Iris. However, the charges didn’t stick. With revenge on his mind, Kurt was seen spying on Molly at the end of Dexter: New Blood Episode 7 and embalming someone in the next. But it wasn’t until episode 9 that that person was revealed to be Molly.

Brown’s reaction to Molly’s death

Brown, who played Kurt, later opened about Molly’s death. He was speaking with Collider when he agreed with writer Carly Lane that he found it “very surprising.”

“I know. That’s a freak. That’s a freak, that one,” he said.

Brown knew then that Kurt would have to pay, he said. But at the same time, he figured early on that Kurt wouldn’t survive due to the show’s format.

“I mean, it’s Dexter. He’s not going to survive,” he continued. “We know he’s not going to survive. We don’t know how, but we know he’s not going to make it. The last episode, I don’t know what happens in it. That’s been completely redacted from me. Which is fine. I’m looking forward to seeing it. But I read through Episode 9. I read up until then. And I think it started to get redacted right after I got killed. It gives me a reason to tune in.”

The next episode will presumably chronicle the aftermath of Kurt’s death, which came in the last moments of episode 9. Afterward, Dexter and Harrison returned home to find Kurt had burned it down sometime earlier.

Taking them back to her place, Angela Bishop discovered a letter in her mailbox claiming Dexter killed Matt. What she does with that information should be addressed in the next episode.

The finale of ‘Dexter: New Blood’ is promised to be a shocker

Most of the cast and crew of Dexter: New Blood have stayed mum on the tenth and final episode, but showrunner Clyde Phillips previously said it would “blow up the Internet.”

“It’s going to be surprising, inevitable and it’s going to blow up the Internet,” he told TVLine. “It is, I personally think, the best thing I’ve written. Our director Marcos Siega, who could not be more experienced and a better friend of the show, thinks it’s the best thing he’s ever directed. I haven’t seen it yet, by the way. I only saw it get shot. We’re editing Episodes 7 and 8 right now, so I haven’t seen 10 yet. I can’t wait, to tell you the truth.”

The Dexter: New Blood finale will air at 9 p.m. ET on Sunday, Jan. 9. Watch it on Showtime.
