Dexter: New Blood was meant to be “a proper finale” after the original series ended in controversy in 2013. But some viewers feel that it still missed the mark. But when it comes down to it, which one had the better finale? Dexter or Dexter: New Blood? Here’s how fans are voting.

Fans voted on which show had the better finale between ‘Dexter’ and ‘Dexter: New Blood’

The poll asking about the preferred ending was shared on Reddit in March. The Dexter series finale has received the most votes, with 65% of responders choosing it over the Dexter: New Blood ending. The episode was met with much controversy at the time for sending Dexter into the wilds to live in isolation. But in hindsight, some have come to appreciate the open-ended nature of it.

“Dexter wearing his kill suit and dropping Deb, in white, into the place where he’d bury his victims, wrapped in black, before sailing into a Hurricane to finish the job felt perfectly symbolic and like an ending Dexter deserved,” read a comment. “I know the whole trucker/lumberjack thing undermined that but eh, I know why they had to do it.”

Others picked the original ending by default. It’s not that they were upset by Dexter’s death — they were let down by the pacing and how everything ended after so much buildup.

“Dexter had to die at the end of the story, but NB completely botched it,” one fan wrote. “At least Season 8 successfully killed him in the figurative sense, in that he lost everything.”

New Blood was rushed,” read another comment. “We kinda had an idea where it was going but then everything flipped and was quite shocking. It kept looking like we’d have some payoff to all of it but then he randomly killed Logan and everything that followed that. It’s almost the reverse of the original finale to me, where everything before a certain point was like ‘ok, good’ and everything after was ‘wtf.’”

Others disagreed

On the other hand, some felt Dexter: New Blood was the better option.

“Season 8 finale is worse. Its unbelievably bad,” read one comment.

Another agreed, “New Blood was better than season 8.” “Season 8 had an ending that would have made sense had it come after some strong seasons of Dexter spiraling downwards, not improving himself, becoming more reckless and so on. It did not work, because duh, he was actually becoming a better person,” they added.

“I’ll always give my vote to a finale that actually provided closure,” a third fan wrote.

How Michael C. Hall feels about the ‘Dexter: New Blood’ finale

Say what you want about the show, but Michael C. Hall (Dexter Morgan) stands by what happened to his character.

“The way the season concludes is one that resonates with me,” he told The Los Angeles Times. “It feels justifiable. As upsetting as it may be, I hope audiences will appreciate the resonance of Dexter dying this way at the hands of his son.”

“People moaned about an ending that was admittedly open-ended and without any sense of closure. I guess you have to be careful what you wish for,” he added, smiling.
