Dexter fans finally reached the end of Dexter Morgan’s journey. Showtime’s original series began in 2006, well over a decade ago. The pilot episode introduced viewers to Dexter Morgan’s Code and Dark Passenger. Dexter takes out a serial killer and screams a significant line at him in the first few minutes of the episode. In the Dexter: New Blood finale, Harrison repeats that line.

Dexter Morgan met his end in the ‘Dexter: New Blood’ finale

In the finale of Dexter: New Blood, the walls slowly began to close in on Dexter Morgan. Angela arrested him for the murder of Matt Caldwell and later revealed she planned to extradite him to Florida to stand trial as the Bay Harbor Butcher. Dexter managed to escape jail and tried to get his son to leave town with him.

However, appalled by the fact that Dexter killed Logan, Harrison refuses. He points his gun at Dexter and screams at him to, “Open your eyes and look at what you did!” At that moment, the faces of the people Dexter has hurt flash across his memory. Dexter then gives his son permission to kill him, reminding him to take the safety off his gun.

Harrison’s line in the ‘Dexter: New Blood’ finale is an easter egg from the pilot

In an interview with TVLine, Dexter: New Blood showrunner and executive producer Clyde Phillips reveals that this line from Harrison mimics a moment from the original series.

“Then he yells at him, which is an Easter egg from the pilot, he says, ‘Open your eyes and look at what you’ve done,’ and then we do the flashback to Logan, Lundy, Doakes, LaGuerta, Rita, and Deb, and that’s when Dexter realizes he’s right.”

“Then there’s this long, long pause, and Dexter says to Harrison, ‘You have to take the safety off, just like I showed you,’ giving him permission to do this,” Phillips continued. “Urging him, almost, to do it. Harrison’s weeping, he does it, Dexter falls and says, ‘You did good.’ He’s absolving him.”

The first of Dexter’s victims shown in the original series was a pedophile choir director responsible for the murder of three young boys. Dexter digs up the bodies of the choir director’s victims and forces him to look at them, screaming, “Open your eyes and look at what you did!”

Why did Harrison leave Iron Lake?

After Harrison kills Dexter, Angela Bishop arrives on the scene. Instead of arresting Harrison, she gives him some money and tells him to leave town. Then Angela wipes Harrison’s prints from the gun and calls in an “officer-involved shooting.” Phillips also broke down why Harrison had to leave Iron Lake with TVLine.

“Imagine a 16-year-old kid whose mother was murdered and who’s just shot his own father,” Phillips told the outlet. “Where’s he going to live? That’s 100 years of counseling in a town of 2,700 people. He needed to leave, and Angela covered for him.”

Phillips continued of Angela, “She has an opportunity to do something humane and kind and graceful. She takes responsibility away from Harrison and puts it upon herself and sends him off. She’s a heroine at the end of the series.”
