‘Dexter: New Blood’ has Dexter believe Harrison follows in his father’s footsteps

Episode 4 of the series likely answered a fan question regarding how Harrison’s story will play out. Harrison stops his friend Ethan (Christian Dell’Edera) from starting a school shooting. According to Harrison, Ethan attacked him and stabbed him in the midsection. Out of self-defense, Harrison slashed Ethan’s leg. But after seeing the stab wound, Dexter thinks otherwise.

A re-enactment of the scene proves Harrison’s stab wound is self-inflicted. Dexter’s theory becomes more concrete when Angel (Julia Jones) tells him Ethan said Harrison was the one who attacked him. Dexter: New Blood opens a can of worms by revisiting Harrison’s tragic childhood and his mother’s death. Episode 4 teased a cameo of the Trinity Killer, but not in the way fans expected.

The Trinity Killer murdered Harrison’s mother in the original ‘Dexter’ series

The real-life identity of the Trinity Killer was Arthur Mitchell. He was a school teacher, volunteer, and church deacon and had everyone fooled as a normal suburban man. In reality, he was a three-decades-long serial killer who became Dexter’s main antagonist in Dexter Season 4. The Trinity Killer worked in four kill cycles with the victims representing his tragic childhood.

In “The Gateway,” he kills Rita Morgan (Julie Benz) out of circumstance. Dexter finds Rita’s lifeless body in a bathtub full of bloody water. On the floor is Harrison sitting in a pool of his mother’s own blood. Fans assume a baby Harrison was present when the Trinity Killer murdered his mother and witnessed the entire thing. The scene mimics the same traumatic circumstance Dexter experienced with his mother. Dexter: New Blood revisits Rita’s death.

The series makes a solid tie-in between the Trinity Killer and Harrison. When Harrison listens to the podcast about the Trinity Killer murdering a young mother and gets emotional, it alludes to fans believing he knows more than he lets on. Dexter: New Blood furthers Harrison’s storyline when Dexter looks for the knife his son used to hurt Ethan.

Hidden in a flashlight, Dexter finds a white straight razor. It was the Trinity Killer’s weapon of choice when killing his female victims. Deb (Jennifer Carpenter) appears and is horrified to see the weapon. She shouts that Harrison, too, was “Born in Blood” like Dexter was.

There is another subtle to the original killer that fans on Reddit noticed. Harrison’s mother was stabbed in the femoral artery, the same way Ethan was. One fan comments, “Yeah, it was subtle but is definitely a reason Ethan was sliced on the leg. I find it interesting that it most likely happened after Harrison listened to the podcast.”

Alcott revealed to The Hollywood Reporter, “There are pieces Harrison knows earlier on. It’s what he’s been scared of this whole time. It’s him asking, “What is wrong with me?” Because he knows there is something wrong with him.” Dexter now believes Harrison also has a Dark Passenger stemming from his trauma from the Trinity Killer.
