In Dexter: New Blood Episode 7, Kurt Caldwell was finally arrested for Iris’ murder. However, his time in police custody was short-lived. Kurt quickly relayed a story that pointed the blame at someone else. After that, Angela was pushed by the District Attorney to let him go. Like Dexter, some fans are losing faith that the Iron Lake PD will be able to put a stop to Kurt, but could they still have a case against him?

Kurt Caldwell finally gets arrested in ‘Dexter: New Blood’ Episode 7

In Dexter: New Blood Episode 6, Chief of Police Angela Bishop finally found her friend Iris’ body. In episode 7, she called on Dexter Morgan, a forensics expert, to help her figure out what happened to her friend. Dexter discerned that Iris was shot in the back and taken to the caves while still alive, where she was buried under a pile of rocks.

Dexter also found DNA on Iris’ teeth, showing that she bit her attacker. Angela has the DNA tested against Kurt and arrests him after learning it was a match. However, Kurt comes up with a story to get himself off the hook.

Kurt tells police that his father, a trucker, used to frequently pick up sex workers and beat them. These women never went to the police. Then one night, Kurt saw Iris getting into his father’s truck, though he didn’t think much of it until Iris went missing.

Kurt explains that the DNA is actually a match for his father. The DNA test reveals a 67 percent chance that Kurt is the culprit, but the DA pushes Angela to back off the case and Kurt is released.

Can the Iron Lake police still prove Kurt is a serial killer?

It looks like Dexter might have to take matters into his own hands again. Some fans were frustrated with Angela and the Iron Lake PD’s methods in Dexter: New Blood. Even if there wasn’t the most solid evidence against Kurt, it seems like a little more could have been done to charge Kurt with some kind of crime.

For example, Angela has evidence in the form of phone records that Kurt never received a Facetime call from Matt. The police could then at the very least argue that Kurt knew Iris’ body was in the caves and lied to the police to keep them from searching there. This is a crime, even if it was to be believed that Kurt’s father committed the murder.

“It’s ‘filing a false police report’ regarding the search for Matt and ‘obstruction of justice’ because Angela had all of Kurt’s phone logs, both incoming and outgoing calls,” a fan wrote on Reddit. Perhaps the police could have charged him with these crimes. Still, considering Kurt’s power and reach, it’s possible that even these charges wouldn’t stick.

Many fans have pointed out that the police’s evidence against Kurt is entirely circumstantial. One example is Kurt destroying the cabin room where he kept his victims. “The room being destroyed is circumstantial evidence. You can’t be arrested for stripping a room,” said a Reddit user. Additionally, Angela searched Kurt’s cabin without a warrant.

‘Dexter: New Blood’ could introduce new evidence to take down Kurt

There is one thing that could definitely blow a hole in Kurt’s story later in Dexter: New Blood. Kurt blames Iris’ death on his dad. There could be evidence proving it was impossible for his dad to have killed Iris. This would put Kurt in a very tricky situation.

“Alternatively, if I was Angela I’d try to track down Kurt’s father’s whereabouts, if possible, on those dates for when she [Iris] went missing. Imagine if she could find evidence he was out of state or something?” a Reddit user wrote.

This seems to be the Iron Lake PD’s only chance of nabbing Kurt for murder unless the bodies of more of his victims turn up. It’s a little unlikely that the police will have such good luck, so Dexter will likely end up taking things into his own hands.
