Dexter: New Blood takes place in the small town of Iron Lake, New York. The new location is a snowy, tiny, close-knit community in stark contrast to Dexter‘s former home in Miami. Filming for Dexter: New Blood actually did not occur in New York. The crew chose a different snowy location to create Iron Lake and the locals wanted to check out Fred’s Fish & Game.

Where was ‘Dexter: New Blood’ filmed?

Although the revival takes place in New York, much of Dexter: New Blood‘s filming actually took place in a town called Shelburne Falls in Western Massachusetts. The little town ended up being the perfect location.

“I remember being struck by Shelburne Falls — perfect small town, doesn’t look too crowded, it’s quaint, it’s kind of sweet, it’s cold for sure,” said Dexter executive producer Scott Reynolds on the Dexter: New Blood Wrap-Up podcast.

Another executive producer, Clyde Phillips, called Shelburne Falls “probably the prettiest town” during a San Diego Comic-Con@Home panel. “We started shooting at the beginning of February because we needed a lot of snow. We took advantage,” Phillips said.

“That frozen lake is a real frozen lake. That’s a single shot that Marcos did in real-time. And we wanted it to be a small town. Population is something like 2700 where everybody knows everybody else. People know things that happened two seconds ago.”

Dexter works at Fred’s Fish & Game in ‘Dexter: New Blood’

Dexter has a new job at Fred’s Fish & Game in the revival and production designer Eric Weiler chose a clothing store to turn into Dexter’s new place of work.

“Originally we talked about building Fred’s on a stage,” Weiler said on the Dexter: New Blood Wrap-Up podcast. “But I just felt like it was too important to see that bridge and the lake and all the interactions in and out of the store with Dexter coming and going that I felt like we had to have it there.”

Weiler then explained how they transformed the store into the set of Dexter: New Blood. “We completely emptied the whole place out, nothing left, painted everything, we put a mural on the wall, we changed all the light fixtures, we painted the metal ceiling, we added textured ceiling to make it look old fashioned. It came out really well,” he said.

Shelburne Falls residents wanted to shop at Fred’s

The team apparently did such a good job on the set of Fred’s that the citizens of Shelburne Falls tried to shop there. “It was funny too. The town was very excited about us being there,” Reynolds said on the podcast.

“They also wanted to go shopping in Fred’s. Like it looked so much like this great fish and sports store that we had to put sign up being like, ‘This is not a working store. You cannot come inside,'” he continued.

“People did try to come in. ‘This stores great. We needed something like this,'” Weiler remembered. “It was such an enjoyable town. Everybody was so friendly. Nothing but good experiences.”

Dexter: New Blood airs at 9 p.m. ET on Sundays on Showtime.
