Dexter will return to TV this year with 10 new episodes — but without several original characters. The revival series, titled Dexter: New Blood, brings Michael C. Hall back as the title character along with a few others. But one that won’t be is Desmond Harrington’s Joey Quinn.

The cast of ‘Dexter: New Blood’ won’t include Desmond Harrington, according to the showrunner

Showrunner Clyde Phillips revealed in an interview with Screen Rant that Harrington would not be back to play Quinn. The character was introduced in the third season of Dexter as one of Dexter’s colleagues at the Miami Metro Police Department. He had a tense relationship with the character, even suspecting him in Rita Morgan’s death in Dexter Season 4. But he was never able to quite figure him out.

“Quinn does not come up this year at all,” Phillips shared when discussing the revival. “Joey Quinn. He doesn’t. There are some other — I don’t know the difference between an Easter egg and a breadcrumb — But there are some tips of the hat to several of the characters.”

His update comes after both James Remar (Harry Morgan) and Yvonne Strahovski (Hannah McKay) confirmed they also would not be in the revival. It’s unclear whether actors such as David Zayas (Angel Batista) and C.S. Lee (Vince Masuka) are involved. However, Phillips teased the revival would feature several returning stars, including one who played a character from Dexter’s days with the MMPD.

Dexter’s dark passenger will return in the revival

Dexter ultimately ended after eight seasons on the air, with Dexter faking his death to live a solitary life in the wilderness. It was his attempt to quell his homicidal urges and begin a normal life. But, as previously reported, he wasn’t able to sustain that.

The revival will find him living in the small remote town of Iron Lake, New York, where he goes by the name Jim Lindsay and works at a local hunting store. He appears to have a normal life, one without killing. But certain events will cause Dexter’s kill count to rise.

“He is more grounded than he’s ever been, but that dark passenger is a voice he cannot deny,” Phillips told TV Insider. “This is Dexter. People are going to die.”

The villain of ‘Dexter: New Blood’

One of the people who will wind up on Dexter’s radar (and possibly his kill table) is a man named Kurt Caldwell. Played by Clancy Brown, Kurt is a community figure loved by everyone.

“He’s realized the American dream by going from driving big rigs, just like his father did, to now owning several trucks and the local truck stop,” his character description reads, per Deadline. “Powerful, generous, loved by everyone – he’s a true man of the people. If he’s got your back, consider yourself blessed. But should you cross Kurt, or hurt anyone that he cares for… God help you.”

Fans can watch the revival starting at 9 p.m. ET on Sunday, Nov. 7. Catch the series on Showtime.
