What was Dexter’s Modus Operandi in the original ‘Dexter’ series?

Dexter had to follow the ‘The Code of Harry’ to maximize his kills and protect innocent people. As a blood splatter analyst for the Miami Metropolitan Police Department, he accessed evidence and forensic files. One of his main rules is to kill murderers who got away with it. Using the police department database and his forensic knowledge, he would root out his victims and crimes.

According to the code, Dexter gathers evidence and stalks his victims to assure their guilt. His kill method is also meticulous. He prepares a “Kill Room” covered in plastic wrap to not leave behind fingerprints, blood and evidence.

The “Kill Room” becomes a shrine to the innocent lives the killers took. Dexter used an array of weapons to carry out the deed. One of his famed weapons became synonymous with the character, and fans often ask Hall to sign.

Michael C. Hall is not too keen of the one item fans want him to sign

On The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Hall explains how fans often ask him to sign a meat cleaver. Colbert showed a photo of a real sharp clever that Hall signed for a fan. Hall explains he does have some misgivings about the item whenever fans present it to him.

A fan walking up to a popular TV actor with a cleaver in their hand would freak out anyone. Hall makes the joke, “You don’t want to say ‘no’ to such a person.” In his defense, Dexter has become a heartthrob serial killer fans have adored since the first season.

While Hall is willing to sign the commonly used kitchen item for his beloved fans, it still weirds him out. “I just keep my fingers crossed and hope it’s never used to nefarious purposes,” said Hall. Colbert came up with a logical reasoning for why Hall should be careful when signing the dangerous item.

Crime aficionados and fans of Dexter know very well fingerprints can incriminate just about anyone. Colbert joked Hall’s fingerprints are on the cleaver at some point and can get him in trouble.

The revival series has Dexter living a quiet life in a remote town called Iron Lake. He has spent years under a different alias and reigning his urges. As the series progresses and his son Harrison (Jack Alcott) finds him, Dexter’s killer ways resurface.

The infamous cleaver returns in the Dexter: New Blood episode one but under different pretenses. “Indeed, “Jim’s” interaction with the butcher epitomizes the series’ habit of playing with audience expectations — showing Dexter sneaking up behind him with a meat cleaver unsheathed, ominous music rising, only to hand him the newly-sharpened tool as a friend,” said NPR.

As Dexter slowly returns to his old ways in the revival series, he brings back his trusty “Kill Room” and array of sharp objects. Fans even see him sharpening his beloved cleaver with a glint in his eye.
