Willow Smith is a young woman of many talents. A singer, actor, songwriter, and social media star, Smith was born to actors Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith. She first started to grow her fan base in 2010, when she released the song “Whip My Hair,” which quickly went viral. Over the years, Smith has lent her talents to a variety of other projects, from a full-length album to co-hosting the Facebook series Red Table Talk. Now, at the age of nineteen, Smith is already a show business veteran — but as she revealed in a 2017 interview, some of her future plans don’t even involve the entertainment space.

Willow Smith was born into privilege

Willow Smith was born in California in October 2000. Raised in an affluent neighborhood in Los Angeles, Smith wanted for nothing and enjoyed all the perks of fame, attending red carpet events with her parents, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith. From an early age, Smith revealed that she had natural talent, and she went on to make her acting debut in 2007, in her father’s apocalyptic film, I Am Legend.

In 2008, Smith worked on two different film projects — acting in the movie Kit Kittredge: An American Girl and playing a small voiceover role in Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa. Although she showed talent as an actor, Smith felt drawn to music and began working on her recording career in 2010. That same year, she released her single, “Whip My Hair.” The song, as well as the video that accompanied the tune, soon went viral.

What is Willow Smith best known for?

Willow Smith became an internet star, thanks to the success of her song “Whip My Hair.” She followed up that popular song with several other catchy tunes, including “21st Century Girl,” and “Summer Fling.” In December 2015, Smith released her debut studio album, titled Ardipithecus. Two years later, she released a second album, followed by a third studio album, titled Willow, in 2019.

2019 was a big year for Willow Smith personally as well as professionally. In June of that year, she came out as bisexual. In an episode of Red Table Talk, which she hosts along with her mother and grandmother, Smith revealed that she loves men and women “equally,” and even stated that she would be open to a polyamorous relationship, reports Pink News. “I’m not the kind of person that is constantly looking for new sexual experiences. I focus a lot on the emotional connection and I feel like if I were to find two people of different genders that I really connected with and we had a romantic and sexual connection, I don’t feel like I would feel the need to try to go find more,” Smith revealed on the show.

What’s next for Willow Smith?

Willow Smith is firmly on the path for stardom, but the young woman wants to do other things in her life, as well. In a 2017 interview with Vulture, Smith revealed that she is very interested in more philosophical pursuits and is curious about physics: “I have a physics class where I invite all of my friends and we ask questions about the universe.” She even stated that she is interested in eventually attending MIT and said that, “I know that at one point in my life, I’m going to go to college for both music and physics.”

Smith is also an avid reader, according to The New York Times, and is hungry for knowledge in every aspect of her life. For now, she intends to pursue her musical career — but it seems likely that as she grows as an artist, she will begin to explore her other passions, as well.
