Fans will soon be able to watch Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in theaters and receive all of the answers to questions that have plagued them since WandaVision aired its finale in March 2021. For example, we still have no idea who the villain is in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film. And even though the possibilities are endless, thanks to the multiverse, we believe that a Scarlet Witch variant is the Big Bad of Doctor Strange 2.

Many fans believe Scarlet Witch will become a villain in ‘Doctor Strange 2’

Ever since WandaVision aired, fans have theorized that Wanda Maximoff would turn into a villain.

Elizabeth Olsen first debuted the role in Avengers: Age of Ultron, where she started as a misguided villain. But once Wanda and her brother Pietro realized the truth of the matter, they helped the Avengers stop Ultron. Now fans believe that she will become bad once again after she was seen reading the Darkhold during a post-credits scene in WandaVision.

Wanda has lost her parents, brother, and significant other. And the grief of losing Vision was enough to unleash her power as the Scarlet Witch, creating Westview. She is one of the strongest beings in the universe, and that power could turn anyone over to the dark side. And it doesn’t help that she has a history of treading the line between good and evil in the comics.

Plus, in the Doctor Strange 2 trailer, Scarlet Witch tells Doctor Strange, “You break the rules and become a hero. I do it, and I become the enemy. That doesn’t seem fair.”

After all she’s been through, could Wanda really turn bad in the Doctor Strange sequel?

Why a Scarlet Witch variant could be the true villain of ‘Doctor Strange 2’

The MCU Wanda Maximoff, at her core, is good. Although she is navigating new powers, Wanda has never had evil intentions. So we have a hard time believing that she will turn completely wicked in the next Doctor Strange movie. The more conceivable option, at least to us, is that a Scarlet Witch variant is the villain of Doctor Strange 2.

Scarlet Witch is more powerful than most of us can comprehend, and there’s probably a Wanda out there who is even stronger than the MCU Wanda. And that variant would be quite the match for Stephen and Wanda. Who wouldn’t want to see Elizabeth Olsen fighting herself in a Marvel movie?

There’s also a scene in the Doctor Strange 2 trailer of someone attacking Kamar-Taj. And by piecing together different footage from the teasers, some fans believe it’s Wanda who is enacting the terror on the training grounds. However, there’s a possibility that it’s not our Wanda but a Scarlet Witch variant. Nothing is off-limits in this movie.

A lot of people are expecting the MCU’s Scarlet Witch to be the villain in Doctor Strange 2. So it would be more unexpected and surprising if the Big Bad of the film is actually one of Wanda’s variants. Unfortunately, we won’t know the truth until the movie premieres in theaters.

Sam Raimi teases who the bad guy is in the MCU film

While speaking with Fandango, Doctor Strange 2 director Sam Raimi discussed who could be the villain in the film, and he mentioned Scarlet Witch.

“Well, there’s iterations of our characters throughout the multiverse,” Raimi explained. “So, if I were to say Strange [is the villain] … I’m not really supposed to answer this question, but I might be saying altered Strange. Same with Wanda and Mordo. But I would say, at different times, all of the above.”

It can be hard to believe anything someone from Marvel says these days. But it sounds like we will meet at least one Scarlet Witch variant in Doctor Strange 2 who is evil. And perhaps she will be the movie’s ultimate villain since Raimi divulged that there would be multiple bad guys.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness premieres exclusively in theaters on May 6.
