If you ask a Lorde fan what they want most, it’s probably a third album or some new live performances. Well, come 2022, Lorde will definitely have at least one of those things covered. And with one festival just announced, does that confirm Lorde’s new music? Not necessarily, but with rumors swirling for a while with near-certainty and now a Primavera Sound performance coming up, fans are gearing up for a release soon.

Lorde was just announced for the Primavera Sound festival in Barcelona in 2022

Primavera Sound, which is a music festival that takes place in Barcelona, Spain, just announced its stacked lineup for its 2022 music festival after having to cancel both the 2020 and 2021 festivals because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. 400 artists will be there from big names like The Strokes, Tame Impala, Dua Lipa, Megan Thee Stallion, and many more.

Of course, Lorde is another big one, and she’s the one that has fans freaking out because of her absence from releasing music.

Mark Savage, a BBC music reporter, tweeted out that Primavera Sound’s official announcement “subtweeted” Lorde by saying she’s coming out of “retirement.” Primavera Sound’s announcement read, “Lorde, who will emerge from her retirement with her third album after her unforgettable visit in 2018.” Their site has since been changed to exclude the “third album” bit.

A lot of fans think this is a confirmation she’s releasing new music this year, which has long been rumored

But people, like those that run the account for The Tempest, took it as the perfect moment to be excited. It, of course, confirms that, for one, Lorde is coming back to perform at the very least. Since Melodrama, her last album, came out in 2017, and she went on tour between 2017 and 2018, she hasn’t performed live in almost three years.

Other fans are taking it a step further. As stated before, rumors about a third album have been around and are only getting strong as the months go by. But for good reason; Lorde has commented on working in the studio.

In an email sent to fans back in May 2020, Lorde wrote that she was really focusing on herself because the end of 2019 was rough after losing her beloved dog, Pearl, who she was grieving over. As Entertainment Tonight reported, Lorde said she went back to the studio in December 2019.

“And to my surprise, good things came out. Happy, playful things. I felt my melodic muscles flexing and strengthening,” she wrote and did express that she worked with trusted writing companion Jack Antonoff as well. “A thing started to take shape. And then, of course, the world shut down. We’re still working away.”

That started before shutdowns, and she said that it was, of course, going to take longer due to the pandemic. That was released a year ago, and with this new festival announcement, it seems to be all the confirmation some fans need that the music drop is only a little bit away.

“Confirmation lorde is releasing music within the next 12 months and who says being a lorde stan is a waste of time,” one fan wrote on Twitter

Some are a bit more skeptical, but it’s a good sign for fans

What Happened to Lorde?

Of course, after such a long pause and with no third album announcement in sight, other fans are definitely more skeptical about what this could mean about new music.

Writer and editor Louis Peitzman tweeted, “I will believe there’s a new Lorde album when I’m listening to it, and even then I will have serious doubts.” Joking or not, that’s a pretty fair way to guard your feelings. Lorde’s taught us well.

Another Twitter user joked, “whole tl saying lorde is coming but does she know.” Another made a similar comment, writing, “Lorde getting on here and finding out with the rest of us that she’s performing at a festival next year,” with a clip of the Real Housewives of Atlanta women saying “Who said that?” Others are specifically waiting for Lorde herself to speak on the matter.

It could just be a festival announcement like any other. But for an artist that hasn’t performed since her last album, it’s a big deal, new music or not. And with new music in her back pocket, it only seems like a matter of time before dear Lorde graces fans with new music.
