In a world where almost anything can be committed to film for entertainment purposes, Sandra Lee has seemingly cornered the dermatology market. Her show, Dr. Pimple Popper, is one of the most popular shows on TLC, with thousands of people tuning in every week to see Lee dissect and perform skin extractions. Still, there’s a fascinating story behind how Lee got started in the medical profession and how she became a pop culture personality.

How did Sandra Lee get started in dermatology?

Lee was born in 1970 in New York City. Her father was a dermatologist and immigrated to the United States from China with Lee’s mother. When Lee was five years old, the family moved to California. At a young age, Lee developed an interest in her father’s business and decided to pursue a career in the medical field. She attended UCLA and became an assistant for an allergist, eventually going on to attend medical school. After graduation, Lee moved to San Diego in order to really focus on dermatological and cosmetic surgery.

As a board-certified dermatologist, Lee has accumulated years of experience helping patients from all over the world. She is a member of multiple professional organizations, including the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery. Lee has a special interest in Mohs micrographic skin cancer surgery, tumescent neck and body liposuction, eyelifts, and laser resurfacing. Over the years, she has lent her time and experience to multiple clinical studies and has given dozens of lectures at skincare and dermatology summits and conferences.

Sandra Lee became a YouTube star

Around the year 2010, Lee began to post videos of skin extractions to her YouTube channel. However, it wasn’t until five years later that her channel really took off, with thousands of subscribers watching and commenting on some of the outrageous extractions that she performed. She also developed the title “Dr. Pimple Popper,” which she used for her YouTube channel as well as her other social media channels. For years, her YouTube channel, as well as her Instagram videos, were some of the most popular content on the internet.

Although her extraction videos are incredibly popular, she does post other content as well, focusing on some more obscure aspects of dermatology. Ultimately, it seems as though Lee’s goal is to educate as well as entertain and to help people with all different sorts of skin concerns better understand what is going on under the surface of their skin.

Sandra Lee is one of the most popular stars of the TLC network

In 2018, Lee signed a deal with the TLC network and began filming episodes of her very own TV show, Dr. Pimple Popper. The show has become incredibly popular and is currently in its fourth season. She has become a pop culture celebrity with a huge social media following, and often makes appearances on late-night talk shows.

Lee also has her very own line of curated skincare products. In an open letter on her product website, she explains that she saw “something missing in the world of skincare,” and that, for many people, visiting a dermatologist’s office to address their skin concerns isn’t an option. So she created her line to help people of all income levels achieve their skincare goals. Her product line includes everything from spot treatments, cleansing wipes, powdered sunscreen, and complete skin care systems. Most of her products are affordable as well, priced anywhere from $25 – $65.

Sandra Lee has proven that she is a force to be reckoned with on multiple levels and is truly committed to dermatology as well as entertainment.
