Joshua Bassett said his ex Olivia Rodrigo hasn’t spoken to him since ‘drivers license’ came out

On Dec. 30, 2021, Olivia Rodrigo opened up to British Vogue about how she gets over breakups. She shared that she doesn’t stay friends or keep in touch with her exes. “Besides cutting off all contact, I think it’s important to not only forgive them, but forgive yourself for letting everything happen,” Rodrigo said. “That’s what I’ve learned.”

The 18-year-old pop star confirmed what her ex, Joshua Bassett, said about her in a Dec. 3, 2021 interview with GQ. Bassett was Rodrigo’s co-star on Disney’s High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. He also inspired many of her songs, including her hit single “drivers license.”

“[She] hasn’t spoken to me since ‘drivers license’ came out,” Bassett said of Rodrigo, although he claimed he has tried to get in touch with her.

Olivia Rodrigo celebrated the one-year anniversary of her hit single ‘drivers license’

Rodrigo recently celebrated the one-year anniversary of “drivers license.” The song came out on Jan. 8, 2021, as the first single from her award-winning debut studio album, Sour, which was released in May 2021.

“Drivers license” received critical acclaim and effectively launched Rodrigo’s career as a pop star. Fans and critics compared Rodrigo’s vocals and songwriting and vocals to artists like Lorde and Taylor Swift. The song earned nominations for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Pop Solo Performance at the 2022 Grammy Awards.

The hit broke several records, including Spotify’s record for the most streams in a single day for a non-holiday song. “Drivers license” spent eight weeks in the number one spot on the US Billboard Hot 100 and made Rodrigo the youngest person to debut at the top of the chart.

On Jan. 8, 2022, Rodrigo posted an Instagram tribute to the song on the first anniversary of its release. She shared a black and white video clip of herself playing and singing the hit.

“Happy first birthday to the little song that changed my whole life,” Rodrigo captioned the video. “I made this video a day or two after I wrote drivers license in my living room (with a very squeaky sustain pedal lol).”

She reflected on how much her life had changed since the song came out. “Crazy to think how quickly life changes. thank u to everyone who has supported me so tenderly. music is the most magical thing in the world. 💜💜💜”

Since Bassett said Rodrigo hasn’t spoken to him since “drivers license” came out, we can deduce that the exes haven’t talked in over a year.

Joshua Bassett may reunite with his ex for ‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series’

In a Dec. 9 interview with Time, the reporter confirmed that Olivia Rodrigo will return to High School Musical: The Musical: The Series for season 3 of the Disney show.

There were rumors that the “good 4 u” singer would not return to the series after achieving massive success as a pop star. Not only does the “brutal” singer have a busier schedule now, but returning to the Disney show would mean working with her ex-boyfriend, Joshua Bassett.

In the article, Rodrigo stated, “Songwriting is the thing I take most seriously in my life. It’s the most personally gratifying too.” The reporter added, “She’ll return for Season 3 of the High School Musical series, which starts filming in January, and maybe she’ll act more in the future. But music is her priority.”

So, it looks like Bassett and Rodrigo may be forced to speak to each other if they are going to continue to work together on High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.
