Dwayne Johnson has managed a remarkable feat. He went from being something of a caricature while working in the professional wrestling entertainment scene to being a legitimate and well-respected actor. The fact that Johnson was able to make the leap is a testament to his work ethic, talents, and charisma.

It also doesn’t hurt that Johnson’s physical prowess — something that made him so impressive as a wrestler — has helped define many of the roles he’s taken on as a mainstream star. The actor maintains a fitness routine that keeps him in top shape and able to bench more than 400 pounds!

Dwayne Johnson had pro wrestling in his blood

As Biography.com reports, Dwayne Johnson was born into a professional wrestling family. Both his grandfather (Peter “High Chief” Fanene Maivia) and his father (Rocky Johnson) were well-versed with life in the wrestling ring, but Johnson had no plans to continue the legacy. He was headed to college and a football career when an injury sidelined those plans.

When it looked like professional football wasn’t a path forward, Johnson turned instead to the WWE. He took on the persona of “The Rock” and became one of the most popular and recognizable faces of the wrestling organization. His work in the WWE was impressive, and he racked up titles along the way, but he had his sights set on other goals.

In 2001, Johnson made his big screen debut in The Mummy Returns, and he was such an impressive force that he immediately got his own spinoff. That laid the groundwork for an impressive acting career that has spanned action films, comedies, and dramas. Often, Johnson’s size and physical prowess is part of his characterization. He frequently plays strongmen characters or is cast in a role where the incongruity of his appearance is part of the comedy itself (as was the case for 2010’s Tooth Fairy).

Even when he’s not physically on the screen, his physical appearance makes its way through. He voiced the powerful Maui in Moana, and the demigod’s physique was definitely part of the package.

‘Brutal’ workouts are part of Dwayne Johnson’s routine

It takes a lot of work to stay in top shape the way that Dwayne Johnson does, and he has to manage it on top of a busy filming and appearance schedule. As Men’s Health reported, Johnson’s routine is a “brutal” combination of “classic bodybuilding routines” with “huge amounts of work volume.”

The five workouts the website shares each target a different part of the body: back, chest, legs, triceps, and biceps. In other words, Johnson has carefully crafted a workout regimen that will give him the muscular frame he’s so famous for along with full-body functionality and strength.

Just how strong is Johnson? His routines don’t list the weights he uses (and we can rest assured that the iron he pumps is significantly heavy that it would be for most of us), but he did give a ballpark figure. He can bench between 400 and 500 pounds!
