Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is shaping up to be one of the biggest films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The movie delves deep into the multiverse, something that the MCU has been teasing for a while now. But according to Elizabeth Olsen, Doctor Strange 2 isn’t all fun and games.

Elizabeth Olsen teases a world of problems in ‘Doctor Strange 2’

Marvel released a Doctor Strange 2 featurette titled “Enter the Multiverse,” where actors, including Elizabeth Olsen, teased the upcoming film.

“In this story, we are leaping into different universes,” Olsen shared. “But unlocking the multiverse creates a big Pandora’s box.”

Pandora’s box is famous in Greek mythology for containing curses and evils. So in opening the box, one would unleash unimaginable problems. So if Spider-Man: No Way Home was only a tease of what freeing the multiverse could look like, Doctor Strange 2 likely contains a world of trouble for Stephen and Wanda.

“It’s pretty unfathomably exciting where we’re going in this film,” Benedict Cumberbatch teased. “It’s the most fantastic new phase of Marvel … The stakes are real. [Strange]’s literally coming up against versions of himself.”

Not only will Benedict Cumberbatch play multiple variants of his MCU character in Doctor Strange 2, we know from the trailer that Elizabeth Olsen will portray different versions of the Scarlet Witch as well. And some of these variants likely won’t be as friendly as the heroes we all know and love.

Does Elizabeth Olsen play the villain in ‘Doctor Strange 2’?

Following WandaVision, many fans believed that Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch would be the villain of Doctor Strange 2. Her character has often walked a thin line between good and evil in the comic books. And her actions in Westview don’t bode well for Wanda’s hero status. Plus, the Doctor Strange sequel trailers tease that Scarlet Witch might turn dark.

In a press release for the upcoming MCU film [via The Direct], Olsen discussed why she loves playing Wanda Maximoff. And her comments might suggest that her character is the villain of Doctor Strange 2.

“It’s not the most fun, in my mind, to always play the hero of a story where they do no wrong,” the actor revealed. “I don’t find that interesting. I think the reason why I really enjoyed Wanda from the beginning is that she’s very clear in her beliefs. They just don’t align with others, and that’s OK. She’ll have her own realizations and admit when she makes mistakes.”

Fans will just have to wait to see who the true villain is in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Benedict Cumberbatch has high hopes for the success of the ‘Doctor Strange’ sequel

Marvel fans are supremely excited to see Benedict Cumberbatch and Elizabeth Olsen team up in Doctor Strange 2. And Cumberbatch believes that the film’s ambition will make it a huge success.

“It is madness, for sure, what happens in our film,” he told Total Film. “It’s pretty full-on. And it’s big, man. It’s very, very ambitious. And if we bring it off, I think it could be one of the biggest [Marvel films] we’ve seen so far.”

Given that the Doctor Strange sequel has the highest initial 24-hour period of ticket sales in 2022, it’s safe to say that many people will show up in the theaters for it. Hopefully, the film lives up to the hype, and Cumberbatch is correct in his assumption.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness premieres exclusively in theaters on May 6.
