The movie Speed got the casting just right with Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock, but did you know it almost starred Ellen DeGeneres? Reeves was just as surprised as anyone when DeGeneres dropped that bombshell on him.

Ellen DeGeneres revealed that she almost starred in ‘Speed’ and Keanu Reeves seemed shocked

During a 2019 interview with Reeves, DeGeneres told him that the movie Speed was written with her in mind, a fact that Reeves seemed genuinely surprised to hear.

“The way we should have met, Speed was originally written for me — did you know that?,” DeGeneres asked him. “This is a true story. And Sandra Bullock will tell you.”

She explained, “So the guy that wrote Speed wrote it with me in mind and then Sandy got the part but it would have been you and me and it would have been … it would have been nice … it would have been phenomenal.”

“It just would have been different,” she added.

Reeves didn’t appear to know that anyone other than Bullock could have been his co-star in the blockbuster action movie. DeGeneres helped him better understand what the movie might have looked like if she was on board.

In the clip she showed him, DeGeneres drives the bus and, well, she’s a little bit distracted by what’s going on in the back of the bus. Needless to say, she might not have handled the stressful task as well as Bullock did.

After playing the clip, Reeves said, “Wait … everybody died.” DeGeneres quipped, “You weren’t doing the sequel anyway, what do you care?”

DeGeneres said Sandra Bullock took her role

When Bullock sat down for a interview on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2018, the talk show host couldn’t help but tease the actor about the casting outcome.

After DeGeneres asked Bullock about working on the movie, she interjected, “It was meant for me and you took the role.”

DeGeneres backed up her claim, telling the audience, “It’s true.”

Bullock didn’t pay much attention to DeGeneres’ beef, continuing on with her memories about her time making the film.

“I think about how sweet Keanu Reeves was and how handsome he was,” Bullock said. “It was hard. It was really hard for me to really be serious. He’d look at me and I’d [giggle].”

As for why they never dated, Bullock said, “There was just something about me that I guess he didn’t like. I think it’s true.” She said she believes that they have probably remained friends because they never got together.

Bullock later played a game of “Burning Questions” with DeGeneres. When asked, “Which co-star was the most fun to kiss?,” Bullock answered, “In honor of you, Keanu Reeves.”

Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock had amazing chemistry

Their off-screen chemistry can be seen in a throwback video from their time doing the film, where Bullock interrupts him during an interview.

The two share smiles and a huge hug, have a cute exchange, and she disappears again.
