Lucifer Season 6 dropped too recently to be a contender for the 2021 Emmy Awards. However, the Netflix series wasn’t completely ignored during the annual festivities. Although Lucifer didn’t receive any nominations decided on during the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards, it did snag its first-ever nomination in a Creative Arts Emmy category. Those winners were announced during a two-day ceremony from Sept. 11-12. So, how did Lucifer fare?

The 2021 Emmys marked a special occasion for Lucifer, granting the series its first Emmy nomination after five seasons of devilish adventures. The show was nominated for Outstanding Choreography for Scripted Programming, an honor it likely wouldn’t have received if it wasn’t for season 5’s musical episode.

Lucifer Season 5 Episode 10, “Bloody Celestial Karaoke Jam,” proved enough fun that even the Television Academy took notice. When the series received its big nomination, its official Twitter account sent congratulations to everyone involved in bringing the episode to life.

“Lucifer just scored its first Emmy nomination (Outstanding Choreography For Scripted Programming thanks to Season 5’s musical episode “Bloody Celestial Karaoke Jam”),” the account wrote. “Congrats to choreographer Brooke Lipton and the cast.”

‘Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square’ won Outstanding Choreography for Scripted Programming

While grabbing its first Emmy nomination is a big step forward for Lucifer, the show didn’t take home the gold in 2021. In all fairness, the series found itself mixed in with some steep competition.

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist picked up nominations for two separate episodes in the category. Genius: Aretha received an Outstanding Choreography nomination as well. Both series have received plenty of praise and were just as deserving as Lucifer.

Of course, Dolly Parton remains a showstopper. Perhaps that’s why Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square won the honor for Oustanding Choreography in a Scripted Series. The Netflix film also took home the trophy for Oustanding Television Movie. All in all, it proved an exciting year for Dolly Parton, who can now add an Emmy to her already-impressive list of accomplishments.

Lucifer fans may feel disappointed by the show’s Emmy loss, but there is a bright side. Although 2021 was the first year the show competed for an Emmy, it doesn’t have to be the last. Lucifer Season 6 could find itself in the running during the 2022 ceremony — perhaps in more than one category.

Taking home the gold for its final season would prove a fitting farewell for Lucifer. It would certainly be nice to see Tom Ellis or Lauren German recognized for their acting.

Fans will have to wait to see if the show wins any accolades next year. In the meantime, they can celebrate the show’s first nomination — perhaps with a rewatch?

All six seasons of Lucifer are currently streaming on Netflix.
