[Spoiler alert: Euphoria Season 2 Episode 5 spoilers ahead.]

Euphoria Season 2 Episode 5 showed Rue on the run from her family, the cops, and herself. The episode started off with a bang when her mother approached her about doing pills again. This resulted in Rue discovering her mother and Jules flushed the pills that Laurie gave her to sell. Eventually, Rue ran all the way to Laurie’s house to confess what occurred, and many fans couldn’t help but notice the noisy parrots in the home once again. So, why does Laurie have birds in her house? Here’s a Euphoria Laurie theory that explains everything.

Many fans nearly panicked after watching Euphoria Season 2 Episode 5. The episode featured Rue’s mother, Jules, and Elliot confronting Rue about her drug usage — and it didn’t go well. Rue realized the drugs that Laurie gave her to sell were flushed down the toiler, sending her on a rampage. She ended up running from her mother and her home, and that eventually turned into running from the cops and straight back to Laurie’s home after robbing another house.

Once Rue got to Laurie’s house, she presented Laurie with the stolen jewelry and cash. Rue was also going through drug withdrawals that were visibly apparent to Laurie. Laurie reminded Rue of the deal they had — Rue had to come up with $10,000 for the drugs, or else bad things would come to her. But Laurie also suggested that Rue could sell her body for the money.

Eventually, Laurie offered Rue intravenous morphine to deal with the drug withdrawals, which Rue reluctantly accepted. Rue eventually woke up in a bed at Laurie’s and jumped out of a window to escape after discovering she was locked in.

Why does Laurie have birds? Fans have a ‘Euphoria’ Laurie theory that’s seriously sinister

Laurie clearly leads a drug empire, and a number of others who seemingly work under her also appear to live in her home. In addition to the people, she has parrots in her house. So, why the birds?

In Euphoria Season 2 Episode 5, the camera lingers on a closet in Laurie’s house. The parrot in the background also starts to make noise. As the camera inches closer to the closet, scratching noises can be heard from behind the door. It appears there’s someone behind the closet door who’s scratching — and the birds might serve as a way to cover the noise or alert Laurie of the activity in the house.

“The birds in cages serve as their makeshift alarm system it seems, making noise if anyone tries to escape,” a Reddit user explains.

“The drug ‘closet’ is up by the kitchen and has tropical birds stuff plastered to the door front,” another fan wrote. “I’m thinking scratches are from others held captive on drugs!”

What’s next for Rue in episode 6?

Now that Rue escaped Laurie’s house, what’s next for her in Euphoria Season 2 Episode 6? The preview for the episode shows Rue back at home, so this is a good sign that Rue heads home after Laurie’s. This doesn’t mean Rue’s in the clear, though. She still has a lot to explain to her mother and sister, and she needs to get clean. Additionally, now that Laurie seemingly knows everything about Rue (including her real name, Ruby Bennett), Rue needs to make a safe escape plan to avoid getting kidnapped.

We imagine Rue will tell her mother about Laurie and the drug operation. Additionally, Jules, Elliot, and Rue will likely have another conversation after the explosive nature of episode 5.

As for Cassie, Maddy, and Nate — it looks like the focus might be back on their love triangle in episode 6.

Euphoria Season 2 Episode 6 airs Sunday, Feb. 13, 2022, at 9 p.m. EST on HBO Max.
