Hunter Schafer and Zendaya are the two breakout stars of HBO‘s hit series Euphoria. Both of their characters present a unique experience of adolescence, each with their own issues. And like two magnets, they were drawn towards each other.

Prior to Euphoria, Zendaya’s résumé was relatively family-friendly. She was a Disney Channel actor who would eventually have to outgrow the squeaky-clean image and participate in some more mature projects.

Schafer, on the other hand, didn’t come to Euphoria as an experienced actor. Prior to being cast on the show, she was a working model in New York City.

Zendaya made history at the 2020 Emmy Awards when she took home the honor for Best Actress in a Drama Series.

Jules Vaughn and Rue Bennett have a close and complicated relationship

Zendaya plays troubled teen Rue Bennett in Euphoria, and Schafer plays her new friend Jules Vaughn. Rue struggles with drug addiction and having stable relationships with the people in her life, and Jules navigates life in a new school as a transgender girl.

Initially, Rue and Jules hit it off and become instant friends. But feelings soon get in the way of their friendship, and Jules grows sick of Rue’s codependency. The two have a nasty breakup at the end of Euphoria‘s first season.

In late 2020 and early 2021, Euphoria released two standalone special episodes — one centered around Rue, the other around Jules — to tide fans over until season 2 is filmed and released. By the end of Jules’ special episode, both teens showed they were ready to be back in each other’s lives again.

Hunter Schafer’s favorite ‘Euphoria’ scene with Zendaya

Throughout the series, Rue and Jules share several touching moments together. Few TV shows feature a queer relationship involving a trans person portrayed in such a personal and non-sensationalized way. “Rules” scenes in Euphoria show the very core of human nature that lies in all of us, and our desire to love and be loved.

In a Twitter Q&A after the release of Jules’ special episode in early 2021, Schafer revealed what her favorite scene with Zendaya is. It’s hard for her to choose just one scene, but there’s one that remains with her to this day.

“It’s a really small moment in the Jules special,” she said. “When Rue is injecting Jules’ estrogen for her in this little montage, it was such a special scene to film and such a beautiful little moment that kind of captured their unique love. It was so cute.”
