‘Firefly Lane’ Season 2: What Destroyed Tully and Kate’s Friendship?

Netflix recently released a roster of exciting new shows, and more fans than ever are taking to the streaming service to enjoy the latest in entertainment. One of the most popular new shows is Firefly Lane, a project starring longtime fan favorite Katherine Heigl and talented actress Sarah Chalke as two best friends who grow up together, experiencing the ups and downs of life. Firefly Lane dropped on Netflix in February 2021, and immediately got fans talking. The show is based on a popular novel by author Kristin Hannah, and follows two young girls named Tully Hart and Kate Mularkey.

Beginning with the start of Tully and Kate’s friendship in the ’70s, Firefly Lane traces the girls’ lives as they grow up, chronicling the way that their friendship evolves and changes with each passing decade. Although Tully and Kate’s lives could not possibly be more different by the time they reach adulthood, the bonds of friendship allow them to maintain a deep love and respect for each other.

Firefly Lane has earned acclaim from critics and fans alike, with viewers raving about the long-awaited return of Katherine Heigl to episodic television. Even though the series is new to Netflix, fans are digging deep to learn everything that they can about the second season, including whether their favorite stars will return and what new revelations the plot could hold.

There are many individual story threads that wind their way through Firefly Lane — however, the core of the series is the enduring friendship between Tully and Kate. It seems likely that the second season of the show will continue to mine their friendship to uncover more about each woman and what makes them tick.

Still, fans might have to wait a while for that second season. According to Marie Claire, the show has not yet officially been greenlit for a second season, although there’s a very good chance, based on the popularity of the series, that there will be more episodes to come.

In fact, experts estimate that the second season of Firefly Lane could drop early in 2022 if all the elements align properly.

The first season of Firefly Lane ends with a major cliffhanger, revealing that Tully and Kate have had a big falling out — over what, the show doesn’t make clear. It seems probable that the second season of the show will focus on what caused their friendship to implode.

Fans who have read the book will recall that Tully brought Kate and Mariah onto her show, with the intention of repairing their tense relationship. However, this backfires, and Kate is completely humiliated on national television.

In the first season finale of the show, showrunners don’t reveal that exact reason for the falling out, so it is possible that the same reason as from the book could be what causes Tully and Kate to drift apart. Katherine Heigl does have a theory, however, stating “it can’t be that Tully sleeps with Johnny. I don’t think that any friendship can come back from that. I’ll fight to the death that it not be that.” Ultimately, fans might have to wait a year or more to find out what happens between the best friends.
