‘Full House:’ Why Did DJ Tanner and Steve Break up During This Series?
Even though they went to prom together and Steve ate pretty much all of the Tanners’ food, this couple did break up on Full House. That is, until DJ Tanner-Fuller and Steve Hale bumped into each other on the spinoff series, Fuller House.
DJ Tanner and Steve Hale are high school sweethearts on ‘Full House’
As the eldest of the Tanner sisters, DJ Tanner starts getting serious with one boy after her school trip to Spain. That’s one of the star members of the wrestling team and foodie, Steve Hale.
These two did almost everything together. Steve went to Michelle’s school play, America the Beautiful, while DJ encouraged Steve to attend a good college. After a few disagreements, though, these two decided it was time to part ways.

Even though they dated for a good portion of high school, this couple decided to break up on Full House. DJ explains that climbing the mountain was scary but if she didn’t face her fears, she would’ve missed out on so much. Their relationship is the same way. If they never break up, they’ll never know what they’re missing.
After that, DJ goes on a few dates with other boys. Don’t worry, though. The couple reunites on the last episode of the series. After DJ struggles to find a date for the prom, Steve surprises her in a tux and saves the day.
DJ and Steve reunited on the Netflix series, ‘Fuller House’
Thanks to the Netflix spinoff, Fuller House, fans learned what characters like Steve and DJ are up to as adults. DJ Tanner became Dr. Fuller, a veterinarian living in her childhood home with her sister Stephanie and her best friend, Kimmy Gibbler. Steve becomes Dr. Hale and a divorcé.
“Steve is an interesting character because, if you watch the original Full House, you think he’s, like, a dopey wrestler without much going on upstairs, except for his passionate love of DJ and his love of proms and food,” actor Scott Weinger said during an interview with the Today Show.
“But you fast-forward to [the] present day, and he’s one of the Bay Area’s most successful podiatrists, and a divorcé. But the thing about Steve that’s consistent is his love of eating, and his love of DJ,” he continued.
Steve makes his way back into DJ’s life and although there’s another love triangle moment, DJ and Steve finally make their way back to one another. The two wed on the last episode of season 5, titled “Our Very Last Show, Again.”
