Gottfried began performing stand-up comedy in New York City at 15 years old. By 1980, when Gottfried was around 25 years old, his comedy attracted the attention of Saturday Night Live showrunners. He had a few reoccurring sketches but still failed to make it big at the time.

Following SNL, Gottfried found some success on The Cosby Show, Late Night With David Letterman, Hollywood Squares, The Howard Stern Show, and The Tonight Show With Jay Leno. Most notably, he voiced the Aflac duck in several commercials. Later on, his career continued to take off with various film appearances. He voiced Iago the Parrot in Disney’s Aladdin, which fans also know him for.

While Gilbert Gottfried’s net worth proves he had a lot of success through the years, he was still known for being careful with his cash.

“Having kids, you gotta spend money whether you want to or not,” he told CNBC. “If it were up to me, on my own, I’d still be walking 20 blocks to get a slice of pizza that’s 10 cents cheaper. I’m still in that mindset. I’m not one of those people who could show you my collection of vintage cars.”

The interviewer then brought up Gottfried’s “reputation” for pinching pennies. “I did have that reputation among comics — and among store owners,” Gottfried verified. “Anyone I had any money transactions with definitely will remember me.”
