2021 is a great year for animated films. Audiences around the world saw an assortment of exciting movies that are increasingly diverse with varied animation styles. However, the Golden Globes 2022 left Netflix’s The Mitchells vs the Machines out of its nominations and fans aren’t happy about it. Here’s why it was left out of the nominations.

‘The Mitchells vs the Machines’ gains huge momentum

The Mitchells vs the Machines follows a quirky family, naturally called the Mitchells. Katie (voiced by Abbi Jacobson) is the daughter of the family and an aspiring filmmaker. Her parents Rick (voiced by Danny McBride) and Linda (voiced by Maya Rudolph) are the heads of the dysfunctional family that also includes their son, Aaron (voiced by Mike Rianda), and their dog. They find themselves in a robot apocalypse and must save the world.

Netflix’s new animated movie opened to stellar reviews from critics. The Mitchells vs the Machines is sitting at a sparkling 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. Social media exploded with positive reviews and it won awards at a few critics circles. Audiences enjoy the movie’s feel-good energy and hilarious use of comedy.

The Golden Globes 2022 places value on Disney over Netflix’s ‘The Mitchells vs the Machines’

Unfortunately, the Golden Globes 2022 opted to not nominate The Mitchells vs the Machines. Sony Pictures Releasing originally had the project under the title Connected. However, it went over to Netflix after movie theaters closed as a result of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The nominations include Encanto, Flee, Luca, My Sunny Maad, and Raya and the Last Dragon. Disney distributed all of the nominated animated films other than My Sunny Maad and Flee. Awards shows are always partial toward Disney for their family-friendly titles.

The Best Picture – Animated category features an abundance of diversity this year. However, Raya and the Last Dragon seems like an odd decision over The Mitchells vs the Machines. Critics positively reviewed the movie, although it didn’t land the impact that The Mitchells vs the Machines did. It brought families together during the coronavirus pandemic in a way that shouldn’t be forgotten.

The Golden Globes awards show tends to nominate more mainstream animation compared to the Oscars. My Sunny Maad seems more like an Oscar nomination, while the widely-celebrated The Mitchells vs. the Machines feels more like something that the Golden Globes would nominate. The Golden Globes 2022 seemed to simply look at Disney’s slate and select the nominations starting from there.

NBC won’t televise the Golden Globes 2022 as a result of controversy involving a lack of diversity and accusations of bribery. This year, audiences won’t be able to watch the event from home. The awards show was going to live stream on their official website and on YouTube. However, Deadline reported that the Golden Globes 2022 will no longer live stream.

The Golden Globes 2022 will announce its winners via social media. The show likely won’t weigh as heavily toward potential Oscar nominations and winners as they have in the past. Perhaps the lack of a nomination for The Mitchells vs the Machines at the Golden Globes 2022 won’t also happen at the Oscars.
