Greta Gerwig is an actress and filmmaker, who has risen to fame in recent years thanks to the success of films like Lady Bird and Little Women. As one of the most popular young female directors of her generation, Gerwig has been making a lot of headlines over the past several years.

Still, Gerwig likes to fly under the radar when it comes to her personal life, and rarely opens up about her real-life relationships. However, in 2016, when Gerwig was still a star on the rise, she revealed some juicy details about her first big celebrity crush — Leonardo DiCaprio — proving that she is actually very relatable.

How did Greta Gerwig become famous?

Gerwig was born in California in 1983. She showed an early interest in both fencing and dance and ultimately graduated from Barnard College with a degree in English and philosophy.

During the course of her college career, Gerwig began performing in various theater productions, eventually transitioning to roles in independent films. From 2006 until 2010, Gerwig primarily worked in movie roles, while she worked to establish a name for herself in Hollywood.

In 2010, Gerwig enjoyed her first big breakout role, when she appeared in the film Greenberg. Critics praised Gerwig’s acting, and she quickly landed parts in other projects, including To Rome with Love and Frances Ha.

In 2017, Gerwig made her solo directorial debut with the film Lady Bird, starring Saoirse Ronan. The film received widespread critical acclaim, and Gerwig was hailed as Hollywood’s next big “it” director. The release of Gerwig’s next major motion picture, Little Women, further cemented her status as a creative force to be reckoned with.

Who is Greta Gerwig dating?

Just as Gerwig’s star in the movie business was rising, her personal life began to flourish, as well. According to Heavy.com, in 2011, Gerwig began dating Noah Baumbach, a filmmaker with whom she had worked on several occasions.

Gerwig and Baumbach are still dating, and even though the two are doing better than ever in their own separate careers, they continue to collaborate on joint projects. Although Gerwig and Baumbach keep their romance private, Baumbach has sung Gerwig’s praises in past interviews, stating that “Greta’s one of the funniest people I’d ever met, both as an actor and a person, and she also has this incredible vulnerability… She’s very present, always.”

In March 2019, Gerwig gave birth to the couple’s son, whom they named Harold.

Although Gerwig and Noah Baumbach are happily together, there was a time when Gerwig was crushing on a totally different Hollywood power player. In a 2016 interview with InStyle, Gerwig admitted that she used to harbor a major crush on Leonardo DiCaprio.

“When I was 13-years-old, I really thought I was going to marry him,” Gerwig stated, speaking of DiCaprio. “I actually carried around a folder of pictures I had printed out from the Internet of him. My brother yelled at me because I used up all the ink. I kissed his picture every night before I went to bed. I was really sure that one day we would be together.”

DiCaprio was, of course, one of the biggest teen idols of the late nineties. He rose to fame in Titanic, and has since gone on to achieve major critical recognition through roles in movies like The Revenant. When asked in the 2016 interview whether she had met DiCaprio since becoming an actress, Gerwig answered in the affirmative: “Well, I’ve been in the same room with him at least once. And that was exciting.”
