Elon Musk is the richest man alive, but he doesn’t necessarily live like it. His partner Grimes recently opened up about life with the Tesla CEO. According to the singer/songwriter, Musk loves spending money on his professional and scientific projects. But his personal life is not what you’d expect. Grimes claims he lives as though he’s desperate for another paycheck.

Elon Musk and Grimes’ relationship

Grimes was already wealthy when she fell in love with Musk. The Vancouver native developed a cult following due to her literary, sci-fi-influenced songs, music videos, and out-of-this-world public persona. She and Musk were a match made in a galaxy far away.

The couple’s relationship coincided with Musk’s skyrocketing wealth. Musk is worth $237 billion and counting. In comparison, Grimes may not be a business mogul, but she was a self-made millionaire before their relationship, now worth $3 million

Together, they share two children. While their romantic life is not so clearly defined, Grimes did her best to explain it to Vanity Fair in March 2022:

“There’s no real word for it. I would probably refer to him as my boyfriend, but we’re very fluid. We live in separate houses. We’re best friends. We see each other all the time … We just have our own thing going on, and I don’t expect other people to understand it … This is the best it’s ever been… We just need to be free. We’ve always wanted at least three or four [children].”

Their fluid relationship status may make more sense when you hear about Musk’s penny-pinching.

Elon Musk can be stingy like the rest of us, according to Grimes

Grimes discussed her partner’s frugality with Vanity Fair, too. It’s no secret that wealthy people are often among the most frugal, but they still take time to enjoy the money. If the 34-year-old is to be believed, however, Musk’s spendthriftiness goes above and beyond not just that of a billionaire, but some middle-class families, too.

“Bro wouldn’t even get a new mattress,” Grimes explained, calling Musk bro. “Bro does not live like a billionaire. Bro lives at times below the poverty line. To the point where I was like, can we not live in a very insecure $40,000 house? Where the neighbors, like, film us, and there’s no security, and I’m eating peanut butter for eight days in a row?”

It’s a fascinating insight into the mind of a man who is worth more than some countries. However, compared to some of his other purchases, this might show a thrifty man at home so that his life on the go can be luxurious.

Musk may not want to spend big on mattresses and food, but he lives a life of opulence when traveling the world. The 50-year-old owns a $70 million Gulfstream jet decked out in more luxury amenities than his home. Add that to a fleet of cars, jewelry, and a private space fleet, and it shows how Musk values his money.

The South African entrepreneur owned several luxury estates throughout his life, but his pivot to “humble” living came around when he and Grimes got together. Whether this is a show to appear down to earth or an honest look into the mind of an eccentric billionaire, Musk’s relationship with his own money fascinates people who can’t relate.

No one will ever understand Grimes and Musk as well as they do. But as they move forward in their mysterious journey together and separately, anecdotes like these paint a portrait of a man who isn’t entirely comfortable with his wealth.
