Gunpowder Milkshake is the latest hit-action movie to go straight to Netflix in America. With a cast filled to the brim with ass-kicking ladies and a plot that takes the best elements of big-screen franchises like Kingsmen and John Wick, fans already love the stylish, captivating, and refreshingly feminist take on the action genre. With millions tuning in, however, some are already waiting for a sequel. Will it come?

Netflix brings the summer blockbuster home

Netflix has been making exclusive movies for years. These projects run the gamut to prestige mafia epics like Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman to a slew of other Oscar-winning movies ranging from comedy to drama. However, while drama and comedy both translate well to the small screen, the company recently committed to bringing big-screen blockbuster-type movies to the streaming company, too.

From Ben Affleck’s Triple Frontier to the Charlize Theron-starring superhero action movie Extraction, the company is no stranger to offering summer blockbuster experiences from the comfort of one’s couch. Newsweek notes that after 2020 proved to be the biggest year in movie-streaming history, the company doubled down on this commitment thanks to movies such as Gunpowder Milkshake, which is already making waves with fans across the world.

What is ‘Gunpowder Milkshake’?

The Hollywood Reporter notes how Gunpowder Milkshake is a female-led cross between John Wick and star-powered action films such as The Expendables. It tells the story of a family whose matriarch, played by Game of Thrones star Lena Headey, goes away for a long time thanks to her secret life as an assassin. However, her daughter, played by Karen Gillan, continues training as a would-be assassin for many years after her mother leaves to help protect her.

Gillan’s Eva must protect the daughter of one of her assignments after killing him during an errant message. This sets off a series of events that takes them all the way to the top, where Paul Giamatti plays one of the heads at The Firm that Eva works for.

The film’s cast is a who’s who of badass women, from Michelle Yeoh, who plays a master of combat both hand-to-hand and armed, to Carla Gugino, Angela Bassett, and a revolving door of recognizable names and faces. The series tells a revenge tale of assassins taking on a firm that uses them to do their dirty work, but when the crew finds out its nefarious intentions, they turn the tables and fight them for a chance at freedom.

Just because the movie airs on the small screen, however, it doesn’t mean that they skimp on the action. From the first scene, which sets up the movie’s name and tone with a diner-based action sequence, to set-pieces involving bowling alleys, wheelchairs, and Gugino behind a massive gun, action fans and fans of the movie’s cast will not be disappointed.

The movie airs on Netflix in America but will get theatrical releases in several countries around. However, as anyone who saw it could attest to, the film does not feel like a one-off adventure but a kickoff to a captivating world with more stories to tell.

Will there be a ‘Gunpowder Milkshake’ sequel?

With the film garnered moderate praise from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and an uproar of support from fans, a sequel didn’t seem just likely but inevitable. It appears that fans will get their wish. Winter Is Coming, a blog that now keeps track of Game of Thrones alumni, noted that a sequel is already in the works with much of the cast returning.

Little is known about the inevitable sequel, but after the crew succeeded in their first mission, they now have a Firm that might soon seek revenge for what the crew did in the first one despite the film’s ending. Whatever the case may be, Netflix served up just the kind of action that fans sink their teeth into. Although the exact premise of the plot remains to be seen, however, they’ve already built a solid base to grow off of as the universe expands.
