Anthony Mackie was hesitant to take on ‘Captain America 4’

When Anthony Mackie agreed to a Captain America 4, fans rejoiced that the Falcon from Avengers would hold the shield—especially after watching the ending of Avengers: Endgame.

To Marvel fans’ surprise, Mackie despised the idea of becoming the next Captain America. In a SAG-AFTRA panel, he stated he was confused and thought it was an “awful” idea.

“We never talked about [Sam Wilson taking the shield] when the pitch of the show came about it. It was more so about the continuation about what was gonna happen with the shield, if it was gonna be Bucky or if it was gonna be Sam. Because at the end of Endgame, Sam didn’t accept the shield. He told Steve, ‘It feels like this is someone else’s, it feels like it’s yours.’ So at no point in time was he excited or looking forward to the idea of becoming Captain America.”

Anthony Mackie’s other film roles

Mackie appreciates his role as the Falcon in the Avengers series. However, he regularly looks for other roles. The actor made his feature film debut in 8 Mile, the semi-biographical flick about Eminem. Mackie plays the rapper and gang leader, Papa Doc.

After 8 Mile, Mackie landed other roles. In 2004, he appeared in The Manchurian Candidate, starring Denzel Washington, Meryl Streep, Liev Schreiber, and Jon Voit. Although it was a minor role, this led to Mackie’s next project: Eagle Eye, starring Shia LaBeouf.

Later, Mackie held a more prominent role alongside future Marvel star Jeremy Renner in The Hurt Locker. Mackie played Sergeant J.T. Sanborn, who works with Renner’s character Will. The film introduces a complex point about war. As Mackie’s character wants to return home, Renner’s character wants to stay in the field.

In 2011, the actor starred in The Adjustment Bureau opposite Matt Damon and Emily Blunt. Mackie played Harry, a key figure in the fantasy bureau.

Amid his success with Marvel, Mackie took on the late Martin Luther King Jr. role in the 2016 TV movie All the Way. The flick brought Bryan Cranston back in his Broadway role as President Lyndon B. Johnson. Mackie then worked with Kristen Stewart in the Amazon original, Seberg. He played Hakim Jamal, a member of the Black Panthers.

There are 2 new Anthony Mackie movies on Netflix

In 2021, Mackie starred in two new movies and fans can stream them on Netflix.

The actor produced Outside the Wire, which hit the streaming giant on Jan. 15, 2021. He plays the main character, android officer Captain Leo. The plot takes place in 2036 amid an international catastrophe.

Mackie also worked on The Woman in the Window with Amy Adams and Julianne Moore. Due to the pandemic, Netflix purchased the rights and distributed the film on May 14, 2021. Mackie plays Edward Fox, Dr. Anna Fox’s the former husband.

The film received mixed reviews, but Mackie and Adams were praised for their performances.
