It would be fair to say that Emma Watson, Daniel Radcliffe, and Rupert Grint won the proverbial lottery. Their lives changed overnight when they were cast as the golden trio in the Harry Potter movies. After beating out thousands of other children, they nabbed the three biggest roles in the blockbuster films. Portraying Hermione Granger, Harry Potter, and Rupert Grint would make the actors multimillionaires and household names.

Emma Watson, Daniel Radcliffe, and Rupert Grint grew up quickly thanks to the ‘Harry Potter’ movies

Grint, Radcliffe, and Watson certainly had quite a few overlapping experiences throughout the decade they filmed the Harry Potter movies. Working from a young age meant that they all gained a sense of independence early. However, Watson seemed to have even more freedom than her fellow castmates. After all, unlike Radcliffe and Grint, the Bling Ring actor didn’t have parental supervision while working on the films.

Watson explains the key difference between herself and her castmates

“I left home when I was 10 years old,” Watson told GQ about the start of her Harry Potter journey. “We went away for two months, we traveled all around England; we went to Newcastle and Durham and Scotland, all over. “I was traveling; I was away from home. My parents didn’t chaperone me. I think that was a key difference between me and Dan and Rupert. I didn’t have my parents with me; I didn’t have a family member.”

Why didn’t Watson’s parents come with her?

But why didn’t Watson’s parents accompany her during her Harry Potter filming or promotion? According to the Noah actor, the lawyers had their own careers to focus on. “My parents both worked full time and they didn’t want to do that, which I respect,” Watson shared. “They both really are driven in their careers and as [they] are divorced, if my mum had gone traveling with me, she wouldn’t have been there for my brother. It wasn’t really a possibility.”

The ‘Harry Potter’ star was afraid of rebelling despite her immense freedom

Not having a parental guardian meant that Watson had even more freedom than her Harry Potter castmates. Funnily enough, this freedom made her even more cautious about her decisions. Rather than wanting to rebel, it made her more reliable. “This is a long-winded way of saying that I was responsible for myself, and being responsible for myself, I knew I was my own backstop,” Watson shared. “I think I was too afraid.”

Having so much freedom at such a young age could’ve easily sent Watson down the wrong path. Fortunately, the Harry Potter alum came out of the franchise remarkably unscathed. Over the years, Watson has been candid about the fact that her parents didn’t know how to protect her from the overwhelming fame she received from the franchise. However, the actor seemed to find ways to protect herself and her peace throughout her career.
