Clint Barton and Kate Bishop have a mentor-like relationship in the Marvel comic books. And it seems as though that aspect of their dynamic translated over to the new Marvel Disney+ series, Hawkeye. Hailee Steinfeld, who plays Kate, discussed her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut and what fans can expect from Clint and Kate in Hawkeye.

'Hawkeye' stars Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld, in character as Clint Barton and Kate Bishop, stand in a subway tunnel as a train goes by. Clint wears a brown coat over a green hoodie and dark pants, and a tan backpack is slung over his shoulders. Kate wears an oversized dark plaid coat over a purple sweater, and she is holding a bow and a leash attached to her golden retriever.

Hailee Steinfeld discusses the relationship between Clint and Kate in ‘Hawkeye’

During an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Hawkeye star Hailee Steinfeld talked about joining the MCU series. Steinfeld said, “[Kate is] such an interesting and fun character. And it’s been really so exciting bringing her to life. She is a New York City girl who has looked at Hawkeye and idolized this person her whole life.”

She continued, “And she finds herself in a very fun, crazy, possibly life-threatening situation, where she is face-to-face with her hero. And they embark on what ends up being a very wild journey right around Christmas time.”

So, what we are hearing is that Hawkeye is akin to a buddy-cop movie with Hailee Steinfeld as the plucky rookie and Hawkeye actor Jeremy Renner as the grumpy veteran.

Steinfeld also conveyed her own enthusiasm for the role. Perhaps this won’t be the last time fans see Kate Bishop in the MCU. She said, “It’s very fun, and I’m very excited for it to come out. I still can’t find the words to describe just how incredible it feels.”

How does Clint feel about Kate?

If Hailee Steinfeld’s comments regarding Clint and Kate’s dynamic in Hawkeye weren’t enough to convince you that they will be the best part of the series, Jeremy Renner also teased their relationship during an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

He said, “[Kate is] a 22-year-old kid, and she’s a big Hawkeye fan. She has a wonderfully annoying and equally charming manner about her because she’s such a fangirl of Hawkeye. The relationship grows from that, but the biggest problem for Clint is Kate Bishop and the onslaught of problems that she brings into his life.”

We imagine that, at the beginning of the series, Clint is rather annoyed with Kate. But, by the end, the two of them will have formed an unbreakable bond. Just as Jeremy Renner served as a mentor to Hailee Steinfeld in real life, Clint will teach Kate everything she needs to know about being a superhero in Hawkeye.
