Nina Dobrev of The Vampire Diaries fame has landed in the headlines for dating high-profile A-listers. One of her most endearing relationships was with Glen Powell, whose acting credits include Hidden Figures and The Expendables 3. It’s been a while since these two were madly in love, attending Hollywood after-parties and sharing snuggly selfies on social media.

There was just something special about Dobrev and Powell’s love — at least for a while. They did call it quits eventually. But how long did Dobrev and Powell date, anyway? And what led to their breakup?

Nina Dobrev and Glen Powell’s relationship timeline

Dobrev and Powell got together in January 2017. An immediate attraction, as People reported, the two were spotted taking intimate photo-booth pictures together at Julianne Hough’s Idaho wedding. Dobrev and Powell attended a few red-carpet events, too, including a Hollywood Foreign Press Association 75th Anniversary of the Golden Globe Awards. (The couple arrived separately but spent the entire evening together.)

It didn’t last long, though. By November of the same year, Dobrev and Powell had cooled off. Sources suggested the couple’s busy schedules made it harder to see each other. And it felt more like a fizzle out than an all-out breakup. It had been a hot and heavy 11 months.

Dobrev made headlines when she began dating Ian Somerhalder, her Vampire Diaries co-star prior to her relationship with Powell. The Dobrev and Somerhalder coupling was noteworthy because she had publicly shared her “rule” to not date costars. But this onscreen-turned-offscreen love, despite the publicity, wasn’t the same as Dobrev’s relationship with Powell.

When Dobrev and Powell got together, sources said this was a romance for the books, complete with “physical attraction” and “sparks,” according to Hollywood Life. The Love Hard star admitted her relationship with the Ride Along 2 actor was “full of passion.” She stated it was much different from her past relationships that grew from friendship.

The amazing chemistry eventually cooled, though. While official word from Dobrev and Powell was never available, sources close to the couple cited hectic schedules as the reason for the breakup. The couple claimed to be together for a short time before eventually calling it quits. People’s source said Powell is an “easy-going dude” eager to avoid any drama. Reportedly, fighting or disagreements did not contribute to the couple’s love demise.

Since their split, Dobrev and Powell have taken different dating paths. Most sources, including CelebInsights, say Powell is most likely still single. He hasn’t had a public, serious relationship since he parted ways with Dobrev.

Dobrev, on the other hand, spent some time dating Grant Mellon of Let It Burn fame before eventually splitting up in October of 2019. Us Magazine reports a timeline of Dobrev’s dating history right up to her present relationship with Olympic snowboarder Shaun White, which began in 2020. White and Dobrev are still together, having lived with each other throughout the pandemic. White just competed in the Beijing Olympics, placing fourth in his Half-Pipe event. Dobrev posted on Instagram, calling him a “hero.”

Dobrev has had a high-profile dating timeline over the years that includes brief stints with Orlando Bloom, James Marsden, and Liam Hemsworth. While she’s passionately in love with White, some wonder if she’s feeling those “sparks” like she once did with Powell.
