How Long Were Nicole Kidman and Lenny Kravitz Secretly Engaged?

It’s no easy task for celebrities to hide a relationship. Often, fans are quick to jump to conclusions if they see two stars out and about together, and swirling rumors can follow actors around, making it difficult to find the space to get an early relationship off the ground. Despite the challenges of keeping their privacy in a celebrity-obsessed culture, some stars have managed to keep their relationships under wraps and out of the public eye.

Nicole Kidman and Lenny Kravitz are among the stars who managed to keep their relationship to themselves, and they did it for an impressively long time.

Nicole Kidman is an A-list star who has a filmography stretching back for decades. After debuting in the early 1980s and working her way through parts on TV movies and guest roles on TV shows, Kidman hit her stride in the mid-to-late-1990s. It was then that she appeared in films like Batman Forever (1995), Practical Magic (1998), and Eyes Wide Shut (1999). In 2003, she took home an Oscar for her performance as Virginia Woolf in The Hours, according to IMDb.

The star has also shown off a remarkable range. While heavy-hitting dramas have gained her the most accolades, she seems equally at home in more light-hearted fare such as reprising the classic role of Samantha in Bewitched (2005) or voicing a penguin in Happy Feet (2006).

Kidman has notably had some high-profile relationships that have also kept her in the headlines. Most memorably, she was married to Tom Cruise from 1990 to 2001, and the pair have two children together. In 2006, she married Keith Urban, and their whirlwind romance has turned into a long and happy marriage.

Lenny Kravitz released his first album in 1989, but it was the 1990s when he saw his fame really explode. In 1993, he released Are You Gonna Go My Way and earned himself widespread attention and plenty of airplay. His 1998 album Five earned him his first Grammy award, a reflection of his growth as a musician and experimentation with digital technology, according to Biography. The star has continued to have a successful career in music and also branched out into acting.

He played a small but important role in The Hunger Games (2012) and also took on a part for the acclaimed film The Butler (2013) alongside Forest Whitaker. Kravitz has had some scrapes when it comes to his love life — including the time his friend stole his girlfriend! He married Lisa Bonet, and the pair had a child together, but their marriage ended just a few years after it began.

Nicole Kidman and Lenny Kravitz had a secret relationship

You would think it would be hard to keep a relationship between two high-profile stars a secret, but Lenny Kravitz and Nicole Kidman apparently managed to do just that! The details of this romance are a little hard to pin down (for the obvious reasons), but InStyle offers some insight. Shortly after her divorce from Tom Cruise, Kidman rented from Kravitz, who was technically her landlord.

That seems to be how the pair met. We’re not sure when they started dating because they worked so hard to keep things quiet, but it’s clear that the relationship grew serious. In fact, Kravitz’s daughter Zoe (who co-starred with Kidman in Big Little Lies) revealed that when she was about 13 they were “all kind of living together.”

It wasn’t until nearly 15 years after the fact that Kidman revealed they were once engaged. While doing press for Big Little Lies, she casually mentioned she already knew Zoe Kravitz because “I was engaged to her father.” Since the relationship was so secretive, the breakup was, too, but Kidman and Kravitz have both said glowing things about one another, so it seems to have been an amicable split.
