Prince William was born in the Lindo Wing of St. Mary’s Hospital back in 1982. Well-wishers were excited about the birth of Princess Diana’s first child. According to BBC, many waited for hours outside the hospital for the birth announcement. Crowds also gathered outside Buckingham Palace.

Queen Elizabeth reportedly had an unusual response after seeing Prince William for the first time. According to Andrew Morton, author of Diana: Her True Story in Her Own Words, Queen Elizabeth said she was happy Prince William didn’t have ears like his father.

Princess Diana broke tradition by choosing not to have a home birth. She also chose to have labor induced. She mentioned in her autobiography that she had to schedule the birth around Prince Charles’ polo matches.

Princess Diana told Morton she wanted to induce labor because she was overwhelmed by the media attention. According to her, the situation was becoming “unbearable.” She felt like the public was “monitoring” her every move and she wanted the scrutiny to end.

Princess Diana, who was born July 1, 1961, was just 20 years old when she gave birth to Prince William. Her first child’s birth was a little more than a week before her birthday. Princess Diana was younger at the birth of her first child than Queen Elizabeth was when she gave birth to her first child, Prince Charles, in 1948. Queen Elizabeth was 22 years old at the time.

How Princess Diana and Prince Charles met

Princess Diana’s sister, Lady Sarah McCorquodale, used to date Prince Charles back in 1977. However, the two ended their relationship after Sarah gave an interview in which she said she had no plans to marry Charles. She also admitted to problems with alcoholism and anorexia.

Sarah later introduced Prince Charles and Princess Diana. She said, “I introduced them, I’m Cupid,” reports The Guardian, after Charles and Diana’s engagement in 1981. The couple reportedly only went on 12 dates before getting engaged that February. Unfortunately, they divorced on August 28, 1996. Prince Charles later went on to marry Camilla Parker Bowles on April 9, 2005.
