After dropping four bloody episodes on Oct. 15, I Know What You Did Summer switches to a weekly release schedule for the second half of its debut season on Amazon Prime Video. The show’s fifth installment, “Snak ‘n Stuff” raises more questions about what’s really going on in Wai Huna, though answers to the show’s core mystery remain elusive.

‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ ups the craziness by adding a cult to the mix

Between Allison (Madison Iseman) posing as her dead sister Lennon (also Iseman), a rash of brutal killings, teen drug dealers, and beheaded goats, there was already a lot going on in I Know What You Did Last Summer. Plus, there’s the more-than-a-little odd Clara (Brooke Bloom), who found Lennon’s body in the cave and then kept it on ice for a year in order to give her a proper sendoff at the summer solstice.

Episode 5 sheds a little more light on Clara (though not much). As hinted at in episode 4, she’s apparently part of a cult that was active in the community 25 years ago, and which ended in mass suicide, as Chief Kalei (Fiona Rene) helpfully explains during a heated town meeting. Clara seems to be the cult’s last surviving member, and she still lives on the property where everyone died.

We learn more about Lennon’s activities the night she died

We already knew that Clara and Lennon and Allison’s dad Bruce (Bill Heck) have some kind of past, likely connected to the cult. When he visited her home after Lennon’s body was found, she told him his daughter wasn’t “the one.” And when Allison (still posing as Lennon) and the others go poking around Clara’s house in this episode, she discovers a photo of her dad and Clara together — at their wedding.

Bruce’s history with Clara comes as a surprise to Allison, but it seems possible that Lennon was already in on that secret. In a flashback, we see Lennon and her dad getting into a heated conversation as they drive home from the party on the night she died. “You need to tell Allison the truth,” she says.

“We both decided it would be best if she didn’t need to know,” he says.

The argument intensifies, with Lennon blaming her father for messing up their family. He orders her out of the car, which is why she was wandering around in the middle of the road when she was run over by her sister in episode 1.

Elsewhere in episode 5, Chief Kalei pulls basically everyone in town in for questioning in last week’s murders. Unfortunately, her inquiries don’t shed much light on who’s behind the crimes. However, we do learn that the spiders found on Dale’s body apparently come from the Arctic. That means the killer put them there deliberately. Oh, and guess who just happens to have some spiders at her house, munching on rat brains? That’s right, cult member Clara.

In general, Clara’s behavior shifts from weird-but-mostly-benign to full-on creepy in this episode. As Allison and the others are poking around her home, looking for evidence that she’s the killer, she returns home after being questioned by the police. The kids scatter, though Dylan (Ezekiel Goodman) has to go back and help Allison. Clara picks up a rifle and starts firing off shots. Allison escapes, but when the episode ends, Dylan’s fate remains up in the air.

In the final moments of “Snak ‘n Stuff,” we hear what sounds like a woman’s panicked breathing. We also see a bloody knife lying in the grass — the same knife we saw an unidentified person grab outside of Clara’s home. But whose blood is on the weapon? Did Dylan kill Clara in self-defense? Has Clara killed Dylan? Or is there a third person involved? It’s just another mystery in a show that’s already chock full of them, but one we may get answers to in the next episode.
