If ‘Harley Quinn’ Gets a Season 3, Expect a Musical Episode, According To The Composer
With Harley Quinn’s popularity, it’s not a surprise that DC Universe’s adult animated show, Harley Quinn, is pretty popular. But even with its passionate fan base, it hasn’t been given a third season just yet. However, there’s now even more reason to beg for one because it’ll deliver a musical episode at some point. ‘Harley Quinn’ still hasn’t been renewed for a third season despite its popularity
The Harley Quinn show premiered on Nov. 29, 2019 and has its second season finale Friday, June 26. Kaley Cuoco plays the iconic Harley Quinn along with a cast full of other big names. Lake Bell plays her best friend and sometimes-lover (maybe soulmate), Poison Ivy. In addition, Ron Funches, Tony Hale, Alan Tudyk, and Jason Alexander all play key members of her crew.
It’s raunchy and hilarious, and it’s one of the most-talked-about original streaming shows, according to Media Play News. Regardless, one of the showrunners, Patrick Schumacker, tweeted on June 3 that it still hadn’t been renewed for a Season 3. That’s disheartening for fans, but for composer Jefferson Friedman, there’s something pretty major to look forward to, if the series continues.
If a Season 3 happens, expect a full musical episode on the horizon
The composer for Harley Quinn, Jefferson Friedman, talked to Showbiz Cheat Sheet and shared a lot of good information about his process while writing for the series. In addition, he also shared that a musical episode is almost guaranteed if a Season 3 were to happen.
“As far as what I really want to do on Season 3? We’ve already talked about doing a whole musical episode,” Friedman says. “And so, as far as I know, that’s still the plan. So fingers crossed.”
Imagine: King Shark doing a tap dance, Harley having a solo moment during a big fight at the end, and Poison Ivy doing some kind of power ballad (she seems like a belter). Friedman already has a couple of songs, in particular, he wants to create.
“One, I want to write, ‘You’re a Damn Good Cop,’ for Jim Gordon,” Friedman says. “And I want to write King Shark a song.”
Fans got a little hint of that in Episode 9, “Bachelorette,” when King Shark went back to his underwater home and an “Under The Sea” parody song (“Beneath The Sea”) made a fun appearance. It wasn’t as well-received as Friedman thought it’d be, but it did give a funny taste of what could be. Plus, with a musical episode, Friedman wants something that progresses the season’s narrative, a la “Once More With Feeling” on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
“If we do this musical episode, it would be part of the plot, in a way,” Friedman says. “It wouldn’t just be something that’s out of thin air. You know, at least as far as I’m concerned, I would like for that episode not to be a stand-alone thing that has nothing to do with the plot.”
Friedman wants to refresh its sound for Season 3, too
That’s definitely an exciting idea, and it, of course, wouldn’t be the only thing Friedman plans to do if a third season happens. He says that he aimed to give each character an individual identity with his music through the first two seasons.
“I really wanted to respect that idea of storytelling and make sure that whenever I use these themes through each character, that they were cut from the same cloth, very similar at any time,” Friedman says. “If I changed it, it would be only for a big, important reason. For example, when Ivy and Harley make it out of the pit and kiss.”
With that said, a third season would be the perfect time to freshen things up and change the music a bit.
“But [if] we have a third season, and there’s obviously going to be some time lag because it takes a long time to do animation. I think season three would be a good opportunity to sort of refresh some of the themes that I’m personally bored with or think need a little extra zhoosh,” he says.
Again, no one knows whether the show will be renewed, and with the finale coming up, it’s a little frustrating. However, with a musical episode in Season 3’s future, the need to #RenewHarleyQuinn becomes a bit more necessary.
