Ina Garten was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1948. Thirty years later, Garten was working on nuclear energy policies for the White House when she made a decision that would change her life and career. She and her husband bought a small food specialty store located in the Hamptons. They named it “Barefoot Contessa,” and that’s how Ina Garten got her beloved nickname.

In 1999, Garten released The Barefoot Contessa Cookbook, her first of many cookbooks. Just a few years later, she received her own cooking show on Food Network. Barefoot Contessa is preparing to release the series’ 27th season. When Garten began planning her latest book, she noticed the publication was scheduled to release during the 2020 presidential election. She jokingly explained she assumed people would need comfort food, but she had no idea just how right she would be. 

Garten’s most recent cookbook, Modern Comfort Food, hit shelves this past October. The popular celebrity included over 80 new recipes, along with words of wisdom, for her fans and readers.

“Food has an almost magical ability to comfort us, soothe us, and bring us together in so many ways,” Garten said of her inspiration behind Modern Comfort Food. “We celebrate special occasions with food — a birthday cake or a big roast turkey — and we also turn to food for comfort on not-so-happy occasions, a delivery of baked goods to a family member who’s under the weather, or a homemade dinner for a friend having a rough time. Food can be so much more than simple sustenance.”

Garten’s thoughtful sentiment can be found in every selection in her latest project. Emily’s English Roasted Potatoes, Shrimp & Linguine Fra Diavolo, and Cheesy Chicken Enchiladas are just a few of the delicious recipes Garten shares. Plus, she even includes a few of her favorite cocktail recipes.
