‘Insecure’ Season 5 Is in the Works, but Don’t Expect It to Air Anytime Soon

Ever since the Season 4 finale of Insecure aired, fans have been chomping at the bit for Season 5. Though fans may have seen the finale twist coming, that didn’t stop them from impatiently wondering what’s going to happen next. Fans are particularly eager for the show to return since there were nearly two years between Season 3 and Season 4. But, fans will be happy to know that the fifth season of Insecure is currently being written.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Prentice Penny, who is the showrunner for Insecure, revealed that the writers are currently working on season 5. Thanks to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, these writing sessions have gone virtual. Though this certainly presents the writers with unforeseen challenges, Penny is happy that the group of writers is tight-knit enough to communicate effectively even in a virtual way.

‘Insecure’ season 5 is being written virtually

“We’re in the room, writing season five — on Zoom,” Penny revealed about the next season of Insecure. “Everything just takes longer than you think it’s going to. Obviously, so much of comedy comes from people being in the room together — but thankfully we’ve had pretty much the same team since the beginning, so that’s been a blessing,” the showrunner shared.

But just because season 5 of Insecure is coming together on paper, doesn’t mean that fans should look to see it on HBO anytime soon. Because of the pandemic, production for the show has been paused and it’s hard to say when it will be safe enough for the cast and crew of Insecure to go back to work and start filming.

When will production for Season 5 start?

“Yeah, everything changes day by day, week by week,” Penny declared when asked if they had loose plans to start filming season 5 of Insecure. “We were supposed to shoot this year — and, like everyone, we got pushed to 2021. We have a lot of contingency plans for 2021, in terms of when we get to start, but we’re not steering the ship on that. Two months ago we were OK in Los Angeles and it was New York that was in the toilet. All we can control is the writing right now, so that’s what we’re focused on,” the writer revealed.

But how will the show tackle what’s going on in the world? Will coronavirus be addressed in season 5 of Insecure? How will the show tackle the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter Movement on a national scale? Penny revealed that though current events might be touched on or even taken into consideration, they won’t be at the forefront of the show.

Will ‘Insecure’ season 5 address the current state of the world?

“We never like to give anything too much power,” the Insecure showrunner stated. “We’re not that show. But part of our show is about dealing with social, cultural and political things. We still want to have a show that’s about Black love and Black beauty. We need to reflect that, because the idea of being a spokesperson for Black pain or what’s happening would really pigeonhole us. We’re trying to write it like there’s something in the air that’s been happening,” Penny revealed.

We’re excited to see what direction the writers of Insecure will go in for season 5. Though it’s hard to say when we’ll be able to watch our favorite Angelinos be messy on screen again, we’re happy that the writers are creating great content for whenever it is safe to film again.
