‘Insecure’ Star Jay Ellis Teases Issa and Lawrence Relationship Drama Ahead of Season 5: ‘It’s a Shocker’

'Insecure' left off with Lawrence dropping a bombshell on Issa, frustrating her and fans everywhere. Teasing what's next, actor Jay Ellis says 'Insecure' Season 5 will find them on a 'journey' as they try to figure things out.

When it comes to TV couples, there’s no relationship fans are rooting for more than Issa and Lawrence. The longtime loves were fan favorites from day one, but there were some things that needed to be worked out before their romance could continue. Four seasons later, following plenty of will-they-won’t-they speculation, the two finally reunited. But that bliss was short-lived, because Issa has learned Condola is expecting Lawrence’s baby.

The next episodes of Insecure will start from there, digging into Issa’s handling of the news, Lawrence’s struggles with becoming a father, and the impact it has on their relationship. To sum it up, Jay Ellis says Insecure Season 5 will find them on a real “journey.”

Some people saw it coming, but it was a real record-scratch moment for us when Lawrence revealed Condola’s pregnancy to Issa at the end of Insecure Season 4.

The news was absolutely devastating to Issa, leaving her breaking down. She’d always envisioned a certain life with Lawrence, but now that image has shattered. “Now [she’s thinking], can I still have what I want even though it may not look like how I want?” showrunner Prentice Penny previously told Entertainment Weekly when discussing Issa’s current thought process.

Jay Ellis on ‘Insecure’ Season 5

Asked on the Bevelations podcast if he could share any other details about season 5, Ellis (Lawrence) basically said it’ll be a rollercoaster ride as Issa and Lawrence try to figure things out.

“It’s a journey,” he said. “You know, it’s a shocker because we just fell back in love, and we saw why, and we saw magic, and we saw that they’re soulmates. So you know, it’s a journey, and we get to roll that out. That’s a real story that has happened to people that we know. So we get to roll that out and really play with what that means.”

“Like, is Issa gonna be a stepmom? Is she not down with it? Is Lawrence gonna be involved? Is he not gonna be involved? What does involvement look like?” Ellis continued.

“And again, at the end of that season, he was talking about moving to San Francisco, and she was like, ‘I’ll go with you.’ So it’s just one of those things where it’s like, where do you go from here? And how do you really put all those pieces back together after the mirror gets shattered?” Ellis added, making sure to not give away too many details.
