Jada says she knew immediately Jaden was going to be an entertainer. Since she and her husband, Will, are entertainers, she wasn’t surprised he grew up to become an actor and singer. She says Jaden used to dance to Michael Jackson’s music when he was a small child.

“I knew when I was carrying him, you know, it’s Will and I,” she said during a late-night talk show interview. “I just felt like two artists would create a little artist. When he was born, he used to love dancing to Michael Jackson. And as he got older, he had some real skills.”

The greatest lesson Jaden Smith learned from his parents

Jaden says he learned a great lesson from his parents, Will and Jada. He tells Nylon magazine they taught him something valuable and he follows this lesson today.

“The greatest lesson I’ve learned from my parents is to be myself, at all costs, no matter what anybody thinks,” says Jaden. “There’s certainly nothing square about that… or is there?” he jokes.

One way Jaden chose to embrace his individuality was by making the controversial decision to wear skirts. He says he wants to wear unconventional styles so that he can take the heat off of a young person who might want to follow in his footsteps. He hopes a few years from now, it won’t be strange for men to wear skirts.

The world is going to keep bashing me for whatever I do, and I’m going to keep not caring. I’m going to keep doing the same things—I’m going to keep doing more things. I’m going to take most of the blows for my fellow [misfits].

So, you know, in five years when a kid goes to school wearing a skirt, he won’t get beat up and kids won’t get mad at him. It just doesn’t matter. I’m taking the brunt of it so that later on, my kids and the next generations of kids will all think that certain things are normal that weren’t expected before my time.

During a radio interview, Will describes Jaden as “100% fearless.” He says his son will do anything. One example is Jaden’s participation in Louis Vuitton’s campaign for their women’s clothing line. Although some celebrities might be hesitant to take such a big risk, Jaden jumped at the opportunity. “He is completely willing to live and die by his artistic decisions,” Will continued.

In a separate radio interview, Will says Jaden doesn’t pay attention to what other people think. “He’s like one of the only individuals that I’ve ever met that absolutely, thoroughly, and completely, authentically does not give a damn what somebody thinks about him,” he says.
