The Smiths are getting more attention than ever thanks to Jada Pinkett Smith’s Red Table Talk. But Jaden Smith also has plenty of fans. The young star is making a name for himself thanks to his music and unique fashion. And fans are often wondering what he’ll say next.

Back in 2013, a fan asked Jaden what he looks for in a woman he’s dating. And he noted intelligence is extremely important. Here’s why.

Will Smith once advised son Jaden Smith to skip relationships in his early teen years

Will Smith and Jada made it known that they’re not typical parents, as they don’t have many rules in their household. But they still certainly have opinions about what Jaden and Willow choose to do. And when it comes to dating, Will and Jada have plenty to say about their kids’ choices in partners.

It seems Will once advised Jaden to skip dating altogether during the teen years. In 2013, Will and Jaden visited The Graham Norton Show along with a few other celebrities. And the topic of dating came up.

“I’ve heard that Will, your dad, he’s told you that now is not the time to be dating,” Graham Norton said to Jaden. “Is that true?”

“He didn’t say you can’t date,” Jaden explained. “He said, hey, I’m just gonna give you a word of advice, buddy to another buddy, you don’t want a girlfriend right now. You have a big movie coming out. It’s really gonna complicate your life a lot.”

Jaden said ‘intelligence’ in women is paramount if they want to date him

It seems 2013 was a popular year for Jaden to answer questions about his dating life. He was interviewed by Cambio that same year to answer some questions from fans.

“They want to know, what do you look for in a girl?” the interviewer asked Jaden.

“Intelligence,” Jaden initially stated. “I say stuff sometimes that you wouldn’t understand unless you were really intelligent. Like, ‘You know, I was reading The Alchemist the other day and I thought this was really funny.’ And they’ll be like, ‘I don’t know what that is.’ And it’s kinda like, ugh, that sucks.”

It doesn’t look like this type of attitude flies with Jaden’s critics, though. A writer for the New York Post noted Jaden and Willow have a pretentious nature due to their way they were raised.

“Jaden is 100% fearless, he will do anything,” the writer noted Will said of his son. “So as a parent it’s scary, it’s really terrifying — but he is completely willing to live and die by his own artistic decisions and he just doesn’t concern himself with what people think.”

While Jaden hopes to attract smart people to date, it seems Jada’s unimpressed with who Jaden’s chosen so far. In 2018, W Magazine reported Jada talked about her kids’ choices in romantic partners. While she loves everyone Willow’s brought home, she has other opinions regarding her son.

At the time, Willow was just 17. And Jada noted everyone Willow’s introduced to the family is “spectacular, in all honesty.” But Jaden leaves her “concerned.” Nonetheless, Jada allows her kids to make their own choices whether she approves or not.

“Your kids aren’t always going to date people that you love, but I’ve learned that you really have to just be there and support because that can create a conflict that you can’t get around,” Jada explained.

We’ll have to wait and see who Jaden chooses to date in the future. But there’s no doubt he’ll deem them smart enough to understand who he truly is!
