Some celebrities have also joined the conversation and expressed their opinions on Twitter. Amid the debate, The Good Place actor and activist Jameela Jamil has recently announced her exit from the social media network to voice her opposition to Elon Musk. She even went further and called it a “hell platform.”

Musk buys Twitter

On April 25th, it was officially announced that Tesla founder and renowned entrepreneur, Elon Musk, acquired Twitter for approximately $44 billion. As a result, the platform is now part of a privately owned entity.

In a Twitter post, the Tesla and SpaceX head revealed the reason behind his purchase of the social media giant. “The core of a functional democratic society is free speech, and Twitter is the virtual town square where discussions about everything affecting society occur,” Musk stated. He went further to say that he intends to add new features to the platform, authenticate all users, and beat spambots to create new algorithms and boost trust.

Jamil quits Twitter after Elon Musk acquisition

Jamil, a British actor and activist, announced her leave from Twitter shortly after confirming that Musk had purchased the social media network. In a cryptic Twitter post, The Good Place actor stated that an advantage that comes from Elon’s Twitter acquisition is her quitting the platform. Jameela also commented that users on Twitter would no longer have to endure her being a “total menace to society” since she has promised to deactivate her million-follower profile.

Soon after, the post was followed by a series of photos of her lovely puppy. The photographs show the actor holding her dog in her arms. Alongside the photos, she stated, “Ah he got Twitter,” and proceeded to write her reason for exiting the micro-blogging site. She revealed her concerns about Musk’s Twitter takeover by writing, “I fear this free speech bid is going to help this hell platform reach its final form of totally lawless hate, bigotry, and misogyny. Best of luck.”

What’s with all the Twitter frenzy?

The announcement of Musk’s buyout comes as lawmakers and other authorities put mounting pressure on the micro-blogging site over the content it shares and regulates. The platform has repeatedly been chastised for how it tackles inaccurate information, dangerous messages, and fake news.

Musk has made it clear he wants to allow people with opinions on all sides of the spectrum to be able to speak freely on Twitter, but many aren’t convinced this is his only reason for purchasing the site. Some users believe it is to regulate and censor posts that Musk doesn’t want on the platform, but only time will tell what changes come to the popular site as Musk acquires the company.
