He’s known for his imposing physical presence, the scar through his eyebrow, and his tendency to choose roles that showcase his tough-guy persona, but there’s more to Jason Momoa than meets the eye. The star of the upcoming Aquaman movie has built an impressive career throughout the past decade and is now one of the most bankable stars in Hollywood.

With a net worth of $14 million, Momoa has come a long way since the beginning of his career, when he was modeling for fashion designer Takeo. Born in 1979, Momoa first experienced success modeling for Takeo, and eventually won Hawaii’s Model of the Year award in 1999. Momoa even walked the runway for Louis Vuitton and other prominent designers before setting his sights on a career in television.

Jason Momoa’s early television roles

With his chiseled physique and deep voice, it was a natural fit – Momoa landed a prime role in the TV series Baywatch Hawaii in 1999 as lead character Jason Ioane. Following his appearance on several seasons of the hit show, Momoa went on to snag roles on the TV shows North Shore and Stargate: Atlantis.

During the early to mid-2000s, Momoa also appeared in smaller roles in films like Johnson Family Vacation and TV movies like the 2011 Conan the Barbarian remake. While viewers were starting to recognize Momoa’s face, and possibly his name, it was his breakout role on Game of Thrones that was to catapult Momoa into stardom and win him more fans than he ever could have dreamed.

Momoa’s ‘Game of Thrones’ role

The fantasy series Game of Thrones was in production on the first season when Momoa was cast as the terrifying, barbaric character Khal Drogo, the husband of Emilia Clarke’s character, Daenerys Targaryen. The role was a prime one, but required Momoa to speak very little, mainly communicating through body language and monosyllabic grunts.

Despite the challenges that Momoa faced in mastering the role, fans and critics alike raved about his star turn as the primitive warlord.  He became a fan favorite on the convention circuit, a late-night talk show darling, and saw his career possibilities expand in whole new ways. When the character of Khal Drogo was killed off in the second season of Game of Thrones, there was a massive outcry from fans, demanding that Drogo get written back into the story in some capacity. But partially thanks to his turn as Drogo, Momoa had already landed his next role, one that pushed him back into the spotlight.

Jason Momoa’s ‘Justice League’ salary

In 2014 it was announced that Jason Momoa would be playing the underwater ruler Aquaman in the DC cinematic universe. He debuted the character of Aquaman in 2016’s Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice and followed it up with a role in Justice League. While his appearance in 2017’s Justice League was a supporting one, audience reaction to the charismatic Momoa was very positive, and his salary jumped from $4 million for Justice League to $14 million for the upcoming Aquaman film.

Upcoming projects for Jason Momoa

Aquaman is set for release December 21, 2018, and has an all-star cast in addition to Jason Momoa. Superstar Nicole Kidman plays Aquaman’s mother, with Amber Heard as the love interest and Patrick Wilson as Aquaman’s devious half-brother.

Momoa is also appearing in the Netflix series Frontier, playing a trapper in the early days of the fur trade. With the highly-anticipated Aquaman film on the horizon, it is likely that Momoa won’t be slowing down anytime soon, and that fans can expect Momoa’s star to shine (and his net worth to increase) even more.
