Following the announcement of a premiere date for Marvel’s Hit Monkey, Hulu has released a trailer for the upcoming animated series. Starring Emmy-winning actor Jason Sudeikis, Hit Monkey promises to be every bit as dark and humorous as the comics it’s based on. The trailer showcased the dynamic between Sudeikis’ character and the titular hit monkey — and highlighted a few other important characters as well.

Hit Monkey was one of two series to survive after Marvel bid farewell to its television division. The show remained on the back burner for some time, but new information is finally surfacing. And if Ted Lasso star Jason Sudeikis lending his voice to one of Hit Monkey‘s main characters isn’t enough to draw viewers in, the rest of the voice cast surely will.

Per a press release from Hulu, George Takei and Olivia Munn will join Sudeikis in the upcoming series. Takei voices Shinji, a politician who takes up the mantle following a mentor’s death. Meanwhile, Munn plays Akiko, Shinji’s niece, who evidently has a “darker side” than she’s letting on.

Ally Maki, Nobi Nakanishi, and Fred Tatasciore are also part of the show’s voice cast. Tatasciore lends his voice to the titular Monkey, while Maki and Nakanishi portray two cops dealing with corruption and the arrival of Hit Monkey.

The official synopsis for Hit Monkey doesn’t give away too much that isn’t evident from the trailer. It does establish the Yakuza as the show’s antagonists and explain why the two main characters are working together in the first place:

“After a Japanese snow monkey’s tribe is slaughtered, he joins forces with the ghost of an American assassin and together, they begin killing their way through the Yakuza underworld.”

The first ‘Hit Monkey’ trailer promises lots of dark humor

Marvel’s Hit Monkey trailer mostly highlights Sudeikis’ ghostly assassin, who promises to become one of the series’ biggest draws. Bryce dies early on in the show, but his ghost follows around the monkey who takes up his legacy. And from the trailer, it’s hard to tell if he’s more of a help or a hindrance. Either way, his snarky humor establishes exactly what kind of series Hit Monkey will be — one that’s as entertaining as it is dark.

“You’re going to have to kill some evil people that totally deserve to die,” Sudeikis’ character tells Monkey in the new footage. “Because it’s your destiny.”

The first look goes on to show Monkey doing just that. However, it looks like he’ll have to navigate the police and politicians on top of the Yakuza. That’s a lot for one monkey to juggle, but fortunately, he’ll have Bryce guiding the way. So, when can viewers finally see these two in action?

When does Jason Sudeikis’ new show come out?

The new trailer confirms Entertainment Weekly’s previous claim that Hit Monkey will arrive this November. Specifically, the animated series premieres on Nov. 17, just ahead of the winter holidays.

Between this show and Hawkeye, Marvel fans are in for a lot of Yakuza storylines. Of course, Hit Monkey promises to be a bit darker than Hawkeye. Still, it’ll be fun to see more of the underworld outlined in the comics. Plus, who doesn’t want to see Sudeikis taking on a Marvel role?
