Those who follow the Duggars know all about Jill Duggar and her husband, Derick Dillard. The couple chose to take a step back from TLC’s Counting On, and they’re no longer close with most of the other Duggars anymore.

Now, the couple’s answering fan questions. And Jill explained even when she and Derick spent their first Thanksgiving together many years ago, the 19 Kids and Counting camera crews didn’t capture the event.

Duggar courtships are one of the most fascinating aspects of their lives. Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar explained they believe in “dating with a purpose,” and they have set rules for their kids who choose to enter courtships. As for Jill and Derick, this meant no kissing, hugging, or going on dates without a chaperone prior to marriage.

Derick also needed Jim Bob’s approval prior to courting Jill. Lucky for Derick, Jim Bob was very supportive of the courtship, and he even helped the couple first meet. “He sounded like an amazing young man,” Jim Bob once said of Derick. “I felt like from the beginning, [he and Jill] had similar personalities and goals. I thought they would hit it off.”

Derick and Jill connected when Derick was doing humanitarian work in Nepal, though, so it took a long time for them to finally meet in person. But Jim Bob helped the first meeting happen, as he traveled with Jill to Nepal so she could meet the love of her life.

Jill said their first Thanksgiving together wasn’t on ’19 Kids and Counting’

Jill and Derick had the very beginning of their relationship taped for all to see back when they were on 19 Kids and Counting. But it seems the camera crews didn’t record their first Thanksgiving together.

“Thanksgiving is very special to us,” Derick explained during a November 2020 Q&A he recorded with Jill. “That was the first holiday we celebrated as a couple. Jill came to Nepal eight years ago, seven years ago, 2013. Once all the filming and everything was done, we were recorded our ‘goodbye.’ She stayed another week and we had Thanksgiving together.”

“That wasn’t in the show,” Jill verified. “Unless you’ve read our blog, you probably don’t even know that.”

“Once we said ‘goodbye’ for the cameras and Jill went away in the taxi, she came back, we spent another week together without cameras and had Thanksgiving dinner together,” Derick continued. “We made Thanksgiving together. Very special time.”

Fans wanted to know what Jill and Derick are planning for Thanksgiving in 2020. And they verified they’re keeping things quite small. Jill explained Derick’s mom and step-dad are going to stop by and have Thanksgiving with them.

“We’re gonna have them over and keep our limits under our Arkansas … guidelines,” Jill added. “Less than 10 people or something, including our family.”

It doesn’t sound like Jill and Derick will be seeing the other Duggars for Thanksgiving this year, though this shouldn’t be too surprising. It looks like Jill and Derick seldom see Jill’s side of the family for holidays. This was noticed by fans during the holiday season in 2019, and it’s also when Derick started fueling rumors of a family rift by telling Instagram followers he and Jill don’t see the Duggars too often.

We’re glad Jill and Derick are keeping their bubble small and safe during Thanksgiving 2020!
