Johnny Depp Said in His Perfect World, He’d Only Work With Winona Ryder and Tim Burton

Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder were engaged in the early ’90s. The celebs were madly in love while starring in Tim Burton‘s gothic-fairytale romance, Edward Scissorhands (1990.) And according to Depp, in his perfect world, he’d exclusively work with Burton and Ryder.

Depp and Ryder were planning on getting married while starring in the 1990 film. It was Depp’s first big movie role, as well as the first film he starred in that was directed by Tim Burton. Following Scissorhands, Depp and the director would go on to collaborate in several films together, including Ed Wood, Alice In Wonderland, Sleepy Hollow, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride, Sweeney Todd, and Dark Shadows.

Meanwhile, Ryder has starred in several iconic Burton movies, including Beetlejuice, Frankenweenie, and of course, Edward Scissorhands.

But sadly, Depp and Ryder split before they could continue working together again.

Yet, according to fan theories, some believe that the director as well as the ex-couple will collaborate again for Beetlejuice 2.

While Ryder will be returning in the sequel film to play Lydia Deetz, reports suggest that Burton is looking to cast Depp as a prominent role.

According to CinemaBlend, there is “speculation about his longtime collaborator, Tim Burton, finally making a Beetlejuice sequel — and giving Johnny Depp a prominent role in the film. Though he didn’t appear in the original 1988 movie, Depp has had career-defining turns in several other Burton films.”

The Pirates of The Caribbean star had such a good time working with Ryder and Burton in Edward Scissorhands that he once claimed he would only want to work with them if he could.

“The fact that we’re together and in love certainly won’t hurt (Edward Scissorhands),” Depp said of Ryder in a 1990 interview with Movieline Magazine. “Winona and I are engaged. It’s official. She has a lot of talent and, aside from that, I also happen to love her. I’m sure we’re going to do more (films) together,” he said. “People have had great success at that, like John Cassavetes and Gena Rowlands. In a perfect world, I’d just do movies with Winona and Tim Burton and live happily ever after.”

Depp and Ryder seemed so perfect together. So what ultimately caused them to break things off after four years of being engaged?

According to Depp, it was the media that tore them apart.

The actor says that the press was constantly trying to interfere with their relationship and that they no longer had any privacy as a couple. And according to Depp, the breakup was his fault.

“It’s very hard to have a personal life in this town,” he told The Los Angeles Times. “My relationship with Winona, it was my mistake to be as open as we were. But I thought if we were honest, it would destroy that curiosity monster. Instead, it fed it, gave people license to feel they were part of it.”
