Julia Garner has been offered the role of Madonna in an upcoming biopic about the iconic “Material Girl” singer, according to a new report. The actor, who is known for Inventing Anna, The Americans, and Ozark, beat out at least a dozen other candidates for the coveted role, per Variety.

While Garner’s casting has not been confirmed, sources that spoke to Variety say that she is likely to accept the part. Madonna will direct the movie, which will focus on the pop star’s early years.

Others who were rumored to be under consideration for the role include Florence Pugh, Alexa Demie, Odessa Young, Bebe Rexha, and Sky Ferreira.

The audition process was ‘grueling,’ according to reports

The Madonna biopic has been in the works for some time. The search for the perfect actor to play the star has been a “grueling” one for candidates, insiders told The Hollywood Reporter earlier this year.

The process included 11-hour choreography sessions with Madonna’s choreographer, as well as Madonna herself. There were also readings and singing auditions with the “Vogue” singer.

“You have to be able to do everything,” a source told the publication.

Madonna Just Revealed That She’s Writing a Movie About Her Life

This isn’t the first time that someone has tried to make a movie about the singer, whose real name is Madonna Louise Ciccone. But she wanted to take charge of her own story, she said during an appearance on The Tonight Show in October 2021 (via YouTube).

“The reason I’m doing it is because a bunch of people have tried to write movies about me, but they’re always men,” she told host Jimmy Fallon. One script she read “was the most hideous, superficial crap,” she said. The director attached — whom she did not name — was “a total misogynist.”

“Why would these people make a movie about my life? There’s nothing true in the script, the guy who’s making it has no understanding of women,” she said. “No appreciation for women. No respect for women.”

“There’s nobody on this planet that can write or direct and make a movie about me better than me,” she added. “And that is just the truth.”
