Zack Snyder is a high-profile director and filmmaker, who first burst onto the scene in the early 2000s with a remake of Dawn of the Dead. Snyder has become closely associated with comic book and superhero films, including Watchmen, Man of Steel, and 300: Rise of an Empire.

In recent days, Snyder has risen to the forefront of the pop culture world yet again, with the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, a director’s cut of the infamously beleaguered blockbuster Justice League. Not only did Snyder leave his mark on the film in indelible ways, but eagle-eyed fans can even spot the director himself in one scene if they look hard enough.

What is Zack Snyder best known for?

Snyder is not only a director but a writer and producer as well. For fans, Snyder is one of the best in the game when it comes to telling larger-than-life stories that need a bold, unfiltered take. While Snyder has often been criticized for embracing superhero tropes (and special effects such as slow-motion action sequences), there’s little doubt that his films bring in the big bucks.

As a controversial figure in American entertainment, Snyder is often in the headlines, and often for less-than-positive reasons. Still, Snyder remains a force to be reckoned with, and it seems very likely that he will be involved in the comic book scene for decades to come. He even had a hand in one of the biggest action films of the past five years, even though he had to leave the project before it was complete.

Justice League was released in 2017, after nearly a decade in production. The film was not only slammed by fans, but it was a box-office bomb as well, losing money for the studio and causing the genre of comic book films to falter.

Much of the hatred levied towards Justice League was due to the film’s tone, with many fans criticizing Joss Whedon, who took over directorial duties after original director Zack Snyder was forced to step away from the movie due to personal reasons.

After years of speculation and anticipation, Snyder’s original cut of Justice League, known as Zack Snyder’s Justice League, was released in March 2021 on HBO Max. Interestingly, this version of the film has generally received better reviews than the theatrically-released edition, with many critics praising the characterization and story development. There is a lot for fans to enjoy, including an all-new score, new characters, and an R-rating.

The “Snyder Cut” might be close to four hours in length, but that isn’t stopping fans from pouring over every detail of the newly-released film. The film contains many Zack Snyder signatures — and in one notable scene, viewers can even spot Snyder himself in a rare cameo.

According to Insider, Snyder can be seen at the beginning of the film, when Lois Lane stops in a coffee shop for a drink to go. The cameo is around the 16-minute mark, and although it is a very brief cameo, it is a meaningful one.

As Snyder’s publicist Bebe Lerner Baron explained, the coffee shop holds a special place in Snyder’s heart: “It’s called Fred and Ginger Coffee and is a real coffee shop in Kings Langley. Zack would go there to sit and storyboard the film.”
