Kanye West released ‘Donda’ in August 2021

Kanye West‘s use of the Donda name dates back nearly a decade. In 2012, he named his creative company after his late mother, who died in 2007 as West’s profile in the industry grew.

West is a prolific artist, and many fans expected him to release an album in 2021. He hosted three separate listening events in July and August where he played songs from the album and appeared on stage with fellow controversial figures Marilyn Manson and DaBaby.

In the lead-up to the album’s release, West teased the wide array of the artists that had contributed to songs on Donda. Among them were The Weeknd, Travis Scott, Playboi Carti, Kid Cudi, Young Thug, Ariana Grande, Chris Brown, Lil Yachty, Roddy Ricch, DaBaby, the late Pop Smoke, Ty Dolla $ign, and West’s Watch the Throne partner Jay-Z.

Kanye West is working on ‘Donda 2’

Donda is nominated for Best Rap Album and Album of the Year at the 2022 Grammy Awards, and the album has continued to maintain staying power. Even though the LP is just a few months old, the “Jail” rapper is reportedlworking on a follow-up to the project.

Complex spoke exclusively with Pusha T’s manager Steven Victor, who also has worked with West in the past. Steven Victor has worked closely with Kanye in the past. In addition to holding an executive position with West’s G.O.O.D. Music label, Victor also served as the senior vice president of A&R at Universal Music Group. According to Victor, a sequel to Donda could be coming sooner than fans think.

“Ye has started working on his new masterpiece Donda 2,” Victor said. If the artist formerly known as Kanye West keeps the Donda 2 title, it’ll be the first time he’s released a sequel to one of his albums.

Kanye West has been working with Scarface

It’s not just hearsay from Victor; West has in fact been back in the studio recording new music. In late 2021, clips emerged of West in the studio with rap legend Scarface, though they didn’t have any sound. He also linked up with Houston-bred rapper Sauce Walka.

Just like Donda, Donda 2 could likely be an album full of collaborations with other artists. It would make sense given the company he’s kept in late 2021 and early 2022. He rang in the New Year hosting a party in Miami alongside Future and later linked up with French Montana, Quavo, and Diddy.

Ye’s creative spirit can’t be tamed, and Donda West herself acknowledged that in a 2007 interview with Jet magazine just months before her death. “There is no room for shyness,” she said. “I raised him that way, to think critically and analytically and not be afraid to voice what you feel. I helped shape that. I think leaders are people who must do that.”
