Family relationships can be complicated. In Kate Hudson’s case, she and her older brother, Oliver Hudson, have an estranged relationship with their father. Bill Hudson was married to Goldie Hawn from 1976 to 1982, but was largely absent from his kids’ lives after that.

While Kate is grateful for her stepfather, Kurt Russell’s, presence in her life, she recently admitted that her relationship with her biological father does still affect her.

Kate Hudson has been thinking about Bill Hudson and his other kids ‘a lot lately’

Kate and Oliver co-host the Sibling Revelry podcast. The Almost Famous star opened up about Bill in a Jan. 8, 2021 episode.

“You know what I’ve been thinking about lately? Dad,” she said to Oliver. “I’ve been thinking about our sisters that we don’t spend any time with and our brother…brothers. We’ve got four siblings we don’t spend any time with.”

She continued:

“I was thinking about how everybody’s getting older. I just had this moment of, it would be nice to connect a little bit, especially with my sisters. We’ve been talking so much about sibling relationships and distraught relationships or good relations, and we’re sitting here like we have the best family, we’re so great. And yet we don’t ever acknowledge the fact that we have four other siblings. Four. So I’ve been thinking about the Hudsons. Thinking it’s important that we reach out to all of our siblings and maybe connect with them a little bit.”

Kate and Oliver had public drama with their dad in 2015. After Oliver posted an old photo of him, Kate, and Bill on Instagram captioned “Happy abandonment day,” Bill publicly slammed his kids, telling them to stop using his last name if their relationship still hurts them so much.

Kate Hudson talks about familial estrangement so people feel less alone

In an interview on Sunday TODAY with Willie Geist on Jan. 24, the actor opened up more about her relationship with Bill.

“I think that estrangement is unfortunately quite common. I think it’s important for people to talk about that,” Kate said. “Sometimes [we] need a little bit of talk and humor to move us into places where we can heal some of the wounds.”

No doubt, talking about the estrangement on their podcast helps the famous siblings work through their feelings. But still, the complicated relationship with their dad can take its toll.

“It’s a 41-year-old issue,” she told Geist. As she continued:

“I have a great family. I have a beautiful mother, I have a stepfather who stepped in and played a huge, huge part in sharing what it is to have a dependable father figure in our life, but it doesn’t take away from the fact that we didn’t know our dad. People sometimes need to hear that they’re not alone in that.”

Kate Hudson has 3 kids with 3 different fathers

The 41-year-old star’s relationship with the fathers of her three children are much different than her relationship with Bill. As she told Geist, she has high expectations for her kids’ lives.

“I’ve got multiple dads, I’ve got kids all over the place,” she laughed.

“The only expectations I really have that are really high on my life is with my kids and with family stuff,” she went on. “Other than that, it’s like, I just let it go… I work my a** off, and then I walk away, and I hope for the best.”
