Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex didn’t meet Thomas Markle before marrying Meghan, Duchess of Sussex. According to a royal biographer, the fact that Harry didn’t have some face time with his father-in-law in the lead-up to the royal wedding really confused Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge.

Millions of people around the world watched as Meghan and Harry got married at Windsor Castle on May 19, 2018. Meghan, a former actor, became an official member of the British royal family and the youngest son of Prince Charles and Princess Diana became a married man.

The bride and groom said their I Do’s at St. George’s Chapel. Both royals and celebrities attended Meghan and Harry’s wedding. Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, Catherine, Elton John, David and Victoria Beckham, and Serena Williams were just a handful of people on the star-studded guest list.

As Meghan revealed in her and Harry’s bombshell Oprah interview, they actually exchanged vows three days before their royal wedding. The 39-year-old recalled how they had an intimate backyard wedding at Frogmore Cottage in front of the Archbishop of Canterbury. Not a legal ceremony, the two were officially married during the televised ceremony.

In April 2021, royal biographer Ingrid Seward looked back on Meghan and Harry’s wedding day. She told The Sun Catherine had been concerned that Meghan seemed “embarrassed” of some of her relatives.

When did the Duchess of Cambridge become worried about it? Shortly after Harry and Meghan had visited the Cambridge family at their country home, Anmer Hall. Harry hosted Radio 4’s Today and said the people closest to him were “like the family she [Meghan] never had.”

It was “all a bit worrying” to Catherine, Seward said. “She could not understand why Harry had never met his future father-in-law, nor why Meghan, who Harry assured was The One and ‘ticked all his boxes’, appeared embarrassed about her family and unwilling to speak about them apart from her mother.”

Meghan’s half-sister, Samantha Markle, and father, Thomas Markle, spoke to the media — and they continue to do so — before the royal wedding.

Typically family members are present for weddings. In Meghan’s case, only one of her relatives attended her historic nuptials to Harry. There with her the whole way was her mother, Doria Ragland. Notably absent was her father. Charles agreed to walk Meghan down the aisle part of the way (Meghan walked the rest by herself).

In the years since the royal wedding, Harry hasn’t met Meghan’s father and there’s a good chance he never will. Markle has also never met the couple’s son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.
