Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, and Prince William have been married for almost a decade. The pair have weathered more than one royal storm, and they are raising their three children Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, with a mix of royal traditions and modern living.

The Cambridges love story is something of a saga, but in the end they were able to cross the finish line successfully. However, Kate does have one major regret about their engagement.

Kate Middleton and Prince William dated for many years before they got engaged

Kate and Prince William initially began dating in 2001 during their first year at St. Andrew’s University. Though they experienced a couple of snags in their relationship, including a very public breakup in 2007, they were mostly inseparable. Therefore, by 2009 when the couple still wasn’t engaged to be married, royal fans, the British press, and even Kate’s family were confused.

Things became so dire that Kate was labeled “Waity Katy” by the British tabloids and press.  Royal correspondent Katie Nicholl told Vanity Fair, “I know that it was the Christmas of 2009 when [Kate’s mother] Carole was getting quite concerned. Kate was nearing 30, there was still no ring on her finger.”

Thankfully, the prince did pop the question in the fall of 2010 when the couple was vacationing in Kenya.

This is why Prince William waited so long before proposing to Kate Middleton

Knowing his position in the British royal family and watching the demise of his parents’ marriage Prince William was not willing to rush into a marraige to appease anyone.

After getting back together in 2007, the young couple promised to wed only when they were ready and absolutely sure. William also wanted to complete his Royal Air Force helicopter pilot training before getting married.

“I suppose what none of us knew was that [she] and William had actually made a secret pact to be married way back in 2007, after they got together after their second major breakup,” Nicholl explained. “This was a secret pact. And we know that this is a couple who are very good at keeping secrets. So really, Kate had the last laugh, because she’s got her prince.”

Kate Middleton still regrets one thing about her engagement to Prince William

Though Kate did finally get the proposal of her dreams along with the late Princess Diana’s stunning sapharie and diamond ring, she does still have one major regret about the engagment.

In her book Kate: The Future Queen via Marie Claire, Nicholl reveals that William popped the question on Oct. 20, 2010. However, they waited and had planned to announce their union until Nov. 3, 2010 even keeping the engagement secret from their family and friends.

Sadly, the Duchess of Cambridge’s last living grandparent, her Grandpa Peter died on Nov. 2.

“Kate was deeply saddened not to have had the chance to tell her grandfather that she was engaged to William,” Nicholl wrote, according to The Mirror. “She knew he would have been delighted for her.”

In the end, the couple did not share their engagement with the world until Nov. 20, 2010.
